I will try to keep the backstory of my situation as short as possible. I bought a premodded Xbox a few years ago that had a 160GB HD and was modded with the Mechassault exploit. A few months ago the unit started taking a few tries to start up. I.e. I would get to the MS splash screen and the unit would restart. I could power the uniot on and off a few times and it would eventually boot up.

A few weeks ago I moved and when I got to my new place I tried to boot the system. The unit would boot normally after a few times, but I discovered that I could no longer access my mods menu. My unit was running the Phoenix BIOS loader and when I selected Phoenix from the MS dash the screen just flashes and sits at a solid black screen. It will no longer load the Phoenix menu which meant I couldn't load any of my mod options.

During this time I could still play games off the DVD drive fine and when I access the HD through the MS dash it lists all of the data on my drive, games, saves, etc. I sought help from another forum but no one could really recommend a solution. I guess I will tell you what I HAVE done.

I obtaind a correct copy of Mechassault and tried to load the Linux save file. It would not load. I then tried using many different types of recovery CDs, none of them would load. So I decided that I needed to install a modchip to save everything. I installed an Xecuter 2.6CE using the wired method a few days ago. All went well. So I decided to use XboxHDM to clone my old drive onto a new one. I booted the box to the Cromwell BIOS and told it to unlock the drive, but I get an error that says "error reading first sector in primary partition." I tried the unlock command multiple times, but XboxHDM still says the drive is locked when I go to clone it. I tried using the blind hotswap method where you simulate an error 11 or 12. That wouldn't unlock it either.

All I want to do is either get the old drive working or make a new drive with all of my old data on it. I hope I have provided enough information and also hope that someone can help me. I would be willing to PayPal someone $50 or $100 to help me resolve this. I have spent way too much time on this, but I also don't want to give up on it.

My AIM name is redneck1210 if anyone can help.

Don't waste your money paying someone to fix this, it should be fairly easy. To me it sounds like the stock HDD would be havving issues. With the chip isntalled can you boot something like AID?

My problem is that all the "normal" fixes don't seem to be working. Is AID something I would boot from a disc?

Wow looks like a good program, I'm reading up on it now. How will this app apply to my situation? Will it allow me to build a new drive that has FTP access? If so I could install a new drive in my chipped box and FTP over my old files. Provided that I can somehow get the data off the old drive.

Ok I've got AID downloaded. What tools should I use to rectify my situation? Should I try to use the FTP method to save the old drive, or just build a nw drive from scratch?

I have a crappy Thompson drive. I've heard that they are the pickiest drives of all. MY DVD burner is only a +R. I have a few different types of burners and media at work I can try if the +R doesn't work.

I'm trying to update he BIOS now if I can ever find a disc that the drive will read.
