I was overwhelmed by the idea having a xbox, get linux onto it and use it as media center. So i got a xbox at ebay. its serial number is 2194676, 52405
When it arrived, i learned about the fact that is v1.6 is bad, and my xbox is v1.6
Nevertheless, i found the files UXE007.rar, where i learned, that they would work even
with version 1.6., so i did following:
I enahnced my gamepad with an usb plug(female)
I put the normal images MechInstaller-1.0-FATX-256MB.img onto a usb stick with dd
and tried it onto my xbox. i think, i have correctly soldered the 4 wires.
when i plug it in, the usb stick shows activity for a short moment, then
the xbox shows a messsage on the screen "The plugged in memoryc ard does not work. maybe its corrupt" (translation)
Here are my concerns:
* I cannot put the content of the UXE007.rar onto my usb stick, because i dont know, how to create fatx filesystems.
* I cannot open my xbox as there are very strange screws, what sskrewdriver do i need for that ?
* can can i finally get linux onto my xbox ?

If you have action replay it can format your mem stick. If you not there is other ways.
For the screws on the bottem you can use a torx 20 screwdriver, and to get the 3 screws inside after you take the top off you need a torx 10.
Yes you can get linux running, even though you might want a 1.0-1.5 with extra ram so it will run better. _________________

Dear Group!
Thank you for your many Answers.
I managed to come further. This is what I did:
* installed Action Replay Software in my Windows, edited the ini file
and registered the driver
* I have seen 3 Items present on my "memory stick"( not the uxe, the default)
This worked just once, I have never seen this again although all the parameters are still correct
Then I tried, if my xbox accepts the usb stick, but it just says, that the
memory stick might be corrupt.
I tried all the images of MechInstaller-1.0-FATX-x ( 4 pieces) but none of them worked.
My usb stick is a Kingston Data travelelr 256 MB with 08EC:0008(product/vendor)
Then wanted the xbox to "format" the memory stick.
I cleaned it up with 'cat /dev/zero' > stick and fed it to the xbox.
Still same result. Looking at the pc i found out, that the xbox did not write
anything onto the stick. (not at least in the beginning few blocks)
I am not completely sure, if i did not sswap d+ and d- of usb when soldering.
But if i swapped it, i pressume, the xbox would not recognize it at all.
I was not able to test the UXE "Gamesave" on my usb stick, as "Action replay" did not work then
anymore.
But here are also good news. I have Dash version 5960, but I cant watch the video.
This is a general problem in my linux box. Maybe its a firewall issue. What ports does video streaming
use ?
Thank you for your answers.
I found the solution for my problem, that my memory card was not rcoginzed in action replay
I have to
* unregister the driver
* reboot windows
* register the driver
* start action replay
* plug in the stick
then the stick will exactly be recognized once.
hard to go, but it works.
Unfortunately i just have one usb stick to test, and it seems not working.
Tomorrow i will lend some friends usb sticks and test them.
Is there a list of sticks available which are known to work ?

Ok man do me a fav and drop the dear part sounds like your starting a letter to a long lost fam member.
Any way good luck with your memm stick and if you need anything more just let me know man.
When you do get the mod going first thing you will want to do is backup your eeprom to your pc for safe keeping.
