Hi,
Hope someone will be able help orpoint me in the right direction. I am having some problems with XBMC & File Sharing.
On my network I have 3 PC's and a Xbox Console, all can see each other.
PC1, 2 & 3 can access the Xbox via Ftp and the XBMC can access Shared Files on PC 2 & 3 via the workgroup no problems. However XBMC can see PC1 via the workgroup, but for some reason cannot access the PC1's shared files.
PC1 is acting Server running XP Pro, has 2 NIC's. One Nic connected to Cable modem, Nic 2 connected to a Switch for the home network. Both the other PCs also use XP Pro.
I think the problem is the Xbox does'nt have an account on PC1, as I had to set up accounts for the other 2 PC's to be able to access the Shared Files. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If I am on the right path and it is the cause of my problems, how do I set the Xbox up with an account. I did try making one using UserName: Xbox & PSW: xbox, but no luck.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm new to the Xbox scene. I have a friend who does all my upgrades on the Xbox for me. He just recently updated all the software on the console and installed the new XBMC. I would get him to sort the problem out for me, however he is away and won't be back for a few months. And I don't know anyone else, so I am hoping someone here will be able to help and instruct me as what to do.
Many thanks in advance for your time.
Regards

OK...
Firstly, let me extend a warm welcome to you also. Secondly, sounds like a nice setup you have there.
With Samba (as far as I know) all you have to do is share you folders / drives with normal Windows sharing. I just did a rebuild on my machine today with XP SP2 and just watched a movie on my xbox by doing this
BTW, for other ppl reading, this tutorial is for Windows XP Pro, but should be similar with hopefully any Windows version that allows file sharing in a network.
Samba is a Linux protocol used to browse Windows workgroups, but managed to find it's way into XBMC. I used to use other programs without realising how simple it really is to share files to XBMC.
Firstly, get into the Administator's account on your PC, otherwise you might not be able to share your files properly. Right-click on the folder or drive, and select "Sharing and Security". This should show the properties window for the drive or folder, and should be on the "Sharing" tab at the top.
In the section that says "Network sharing and security" there's a tick-box for share this folder on the network, tick it. Then, you'll be given a chance to make a share name for that file/folder (this is what you'll see on your xbox). There's another tick-box "Allow network users to change my files", you don't want this ticked unless you want samba to be able to write to your PC.
Quick note, if you have a firewall at all, make sure you've allowed access for your xbox.
Hopefully this has helped, as this is all I can really think of from the info I've been given..
Cheers!!

Much appreciated for the prompt replies.
I have already done everything you mentioned. The only Nic with Firewall implemented is the one that connects to the cable modem, the home network does not have a firewall, so that is not a problem.
The Xbox can access the workgroup and has access to all shared files on PC 2 & 3, it also see's PC 1 in the workgroup but cannot access it. I did orginally have the same problem with the other 2 PC's trying to access PC 1 and found that I had to create accounts on PC 1 to allow them access. This is why I think the same problem is what I'm having with the Xbox. I think I need to create an account for the Xbox on PC 1 to allow it access also, but for the life of me cannot figure out how. As it is at the moment if I want to watch a movie via the Xbox I have to copy the movie to either PC 2 or 3 and access it that way.
Does the Xbox have a default username & password? I know I have to use Username: xbox & Password: xbox to access the Xbox itself, but does it have a default Username & Password that it uses to access the PC's. If it does I can then create a account on PC 1 with those. If it does'nt, is the a way to set something up, so when it does try to access the PC 1 it has a Username & Password.
Thanks again for your time.

Just thought I'd let you know I have'nt fixed my original problem. However I have found a nice little work around, which lets the Xbox access the files I want it to on PC 1 without having to edit anything. And figured I'd share it with others that might be experiencing similar problems.
My friend who normally does any updating and editing of my Xbox gave me a call this morning and whilst I was talking to him I told him about my problem. Because he knows I know nothing or at least very little compared to him about the Xbox, and knows I don't like to edit files on the system unless I know what I'm doing, suggested I download CCXStream GUI.
To my surprise it is very easy to understand and use, and now I don't even have to worry about trying to setup a User Account for the Xbox. I just told CCXStream GUI what folders or files I wanted to share with the Xbox and that was it. I then went into XBMC and choose Auto-Discover XBMSP Network Shares or XBMSP Network Shares and it finds those shares I put into CCXStream GUI. Problem Solved.
Apparently, if I wanted to do it the way I was going about it I would have to edit the XboxMediaCenter.xml, which he advised against unless I knew what I was doing.
Whether a Xbox novice like myself or even an expert, I highly recommend using CCXStream GUI. Its so user friendly and only takes seconds to setup and your away.
Thank you for taking the time to help me out.
It was/is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
