Hi everybody,

After a week of attempts to get my X3 installed, and reading many forums, I find I need to ask for help...

Here's the situation.

1) Desoldered LPC holes, installed pin head- No problem (correct voltage at all pins with the chip off, and at all points with the chip on)

2) When chip is on, but not plugged in to anything but pin head, all lights come on (2 blue, one green) and M$ dash boots.

3) Like an idiot I broke some of the pins for the external switch connections (attempting to plug in upside down)- However, when I plug this in, with pins missing, the Hdd light comes on while the chip is fragging (Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself, but can you flash the X3 without the external switch?)

4) As alluded to, when I plug in the D0/LAN/HDD and power/eject cables the box FRAG's at attempted start up. Furthermore, when I do a long press the box still frags and will not boot to the M$ dash... Though, if I remove the chip from the pin head (with everything else still connected), the box WILL boot to the M$ dash

5) (other than the F-up with the external switch) I have been VERY careful (no splashes, no fried traces etc.)

6) I have checked, rechecked, and checked again that my LAN and HDD wires are connected to the correct spots, on the bottom of the board.

With all this said, here are my assumptions:

A) D0 is likely to be correctly soldered, as the box FRAG's attempting to boot to the LPC.

B) Perhaps I fried the chip when I screwed up the external switch connection, though no damage is evident.

C) (Assuming B is incorrect) There must be a problem with my HDD and/or LAN connections. (Though, since the HDD light come on the external switch, I'm assuming this ones ok too)

My questions are...

Does anyone know if a Multimeter can be used to detect if the connections at the HDD and LAN points are not good?

Is it possible to use the X3 (assuming I get it working) without the external switch?

Is there anything else I haven't guessed at that could be leeding to my FRAG?

Sorry this is so long, I just wanted you all to have every bit of info. I have. Thanks, in advance, for all your help!

**Update**

Last night I re-soldered the D0/Lan/Hdd points, and then checked them for continuity. To perform the continuity check I placed my multimeters ground point/wand on the bit of exposed wire in the plug that attaches the D0/LAN/HDD wires to the chip. I checked for continuity from the following points: for the HD Led I placed the hot point/wand from the multimeter on the IDE plug, on the opposite side of the board from the solder point; for the LAN Led I placed the hot point/wand on the solder pad that is connected by a trace to the LAN led point; finally, for the D0 Point I placed the hot point/wand on the solder point of the small little block (not sure what it's called) that the trace from the D0 point connects to. I was able to establish continuity on all these points, indicating that my solder points were correctly connected to the proper points. I then rechecked the pins on the LPC (with and without the chip in place), and had the correct voltages... Still the box frags when I attempt to start it with the chip in place, and, no matter how long or short I press the power switch, it will not boot to the M$ dash with the chip in place (though it will when I remove the chip from the pin header).

Could this be ANYTHING but a bad chip?
