I recently bought an XBOX and supposedly the Disc drive was wrong with it. I took it apart and from there i'm not entirely sure. So my question is when I start it up, is there anyway to get error codes, and where's a list deciphering said codes?

If its not giveing you a code right from the get go then the list wont help.
Dose it boot up to a dash or are the lights blinking?
Post a little more info if cleaning the lens dose not work.

Was it ever modded?

If you want to see what an error code is, disconnect the ide cable from one of the drives and turn on your xbox.

Sorry, I I guess I need to work on details more often.

Never modded, got it with the error. No accessories except a Radioshack power cord. I took the XBOX apart, and found some interesting things on the MB. I looked into the Drive and it's next to spotless, but just in case I cleaned it very carefully.

Now, when I start the XBOX, it starts to flash red/green and brings up a screen saying
"Your XBOX Needs maintenance. Please send it to a Microsoft support, yadda yadda yadda" And has a little 07 in the upper left corner.

you can find the flashing light list here http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-257.html
and the 7 in the top right corner means kernel - HDD timeout
hope this helps Smile

Yeah, definitely a HDD problem this. Like the guys said, the first thing to do is check the cable. Make sure its in nice and firm. If you still get a prob, try another IDE cable as it could have been damaged.

If you still get the error, then your HDD is, as they say, dead. When you turn it on, does the drive make any clunking or ticking noises?
If it does, time to throw it on the scrapheap and get yourself a new one.
