ok, im new to the forum and this is my first post i apologise for asking for help, i usually spend as much time as i can helping other people with their problems but tbh im dealing with xboxs not PCs and im pretty much hopless so far ^^
ok heres my problem, i work in a store and today i got a FREE xbox :O, yes free, 1 problem tho, i dunno whats going on with it, i think it has custom software on it, it doesnt look like its been opened, so i dont think a chip is involved, however when i start up i have EvolutionX V+3935 on it
WTF im new to xbox modding so please forgive my ignorence, what exactly have i got here? and can anyone point me in the direction of any tutorials on how to use it. lol

Well, first off let me say welcome to the forums and the modding scene in general. You dont have to be sorry for asking for help here. This is a very freindly forum, and theres no problem too small here.
Evolution x is a dashboard thats is used to replace the default M$ Dashboard on modded xboxes. Since the box dosnt look like its been opened, its probobly been softmodded using an exploit file. A good way to see if the box hasnt been messed with is to check if all the stickers are still on the bottom. An xbox has screws underneath the stickers and the rubber feet.
As for the evolution x dashboard you have, I recomend upgrading to either XBMC (xbox media center) or Unleashed X. Evolution X is an older dash that is no longer supported. Both XBMC and Unleahsed X have had new versions released in the past month.
A great start to unlocking the potential of your new, free , modded xbox would be to download the AID (Autoinstaller Deluxe) ISO. With this, you can install dashboards, applications, and emulators for playing oldschool games. The AID disc is availible through a torrent link in the downloads section or at www.AIDeluxe.com.
Another thing you can do is upgrade the HDD. That way you can backup all you games and movies and eliminate loading times. My prefered method is xboxhdm 1.9 which is availible in the downloads section. The tutorial for for it is here --> http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-153.html .
I find the best way to learn to do things with your xbox is to check out other posts on the forum and try and figure things out yourself. Any questions you have will gladly be answered here at xbox hq. _________________

As he said if the rubber foot pads are on the bottem still then its softmodded. I would check the gamesave area to see if there is anything that looks odd, like a softmod booter. Anyways yes, you will want to get unleashX and upgrade the HDD. _________________

wow thx for the massivly rapid reply, i usually have to wait for ages for a reply on other sites ^^
just a couple of things, most of all i keep hearing the phrase FTP can you explain what this is?
and secondly the required list on that tutorial you linked me to

why do i need to open the box if im only soft moding
3) A bigger Hardrive

2. You need to open the xbox so you can put in the bigger hard drive- which you will want.
3. You want this because 95% of the things the mods allow you to do require more space than the stock hard drive of the xbox.
5. Yes dvd-r's will work, just kinda of a waste of a disk.
6. EvoX dash is evolution-x dashboard. You use this to make a copy of your consoles EERPOM so you can lock the hard drive later. Then you use a FTP program to take the copy off your xbox and onto your computer. I would say use smartFTP over flashFXP, because smartFTP is free forever, where flashFXP has only a 30 day trail then you got to pay to buy it. _________________

FTP = file transfer protocal. If you're using xboxhdm to upgrade your hdd, I couldnt get it to work without a cdrw. And as for evox, since you allready have it installed, look around in the menu options for "back up eeprom". Your eeprom is your unique hdd locking code and you will need it to build a new hdd. Each eeprom is unique to the xbox motherboard it came with. _________________

ok last one i promise ^^, is there a way to "un mod" the xbox, the only reason i ask is i may possibly (if possible) un mod it, trade it in and buy a 360

Ok well first the launcher and the gamesave used to mod the xbox must be on the HDD still. You must also have whatever game that he used to mod it. The 3 games that can be used are mechassult, 007 agent under fire and splinter cell. Go into the saves menu in the normal ms dash or the modded dash and check for any of these games. If one of them has a gamesave called run linux, then that is the game your going to have to get to unmod it. _________________

there is a splinter cell save, it doesnt say run linux it says linux profile but it has the same logo (a red swirly thing) as a save called Linux installer, that the one?
if so what next, i can get the game easy enough from work but what do i do with it?

No its easy...ok u need to get the first splinter cell game, non platinum, and you need to put it in your xbox. Then you need to go to linux profile, and click on it, then click on check points. After that it will boot into the softmod installer menu. Then one should say uninstall softmod, click on that an uninstall it. Then your done. _________________
