Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad..... Did I mention bad? When this game was about to be released, game mags marveled over it's potential. After all, any developer that made Mortal Kombat can't be too bad....right? The game was supposed to bring so much to the table. First, a game where your fighter exhibits actual battle damage. Whether it's torn clothes, bloodied face, or even slight bruising. You are able to inflict limb damage, thus gaining an advantage over your oponnent.
The interaction with walls and polls was just plain dumb. After playing the original Soul Calibur years ago(Dreamcast) I guess possibly my expectations were too high. After all, the Dreamcast is a dead console mentioned in the same breath as Atari 2600. I just cannot believe that a developer that puts out MK can, with a sound mind, believe they have improved on their work. With developing for a console that out muscles anything on the market, this game should have been king. Instead, it was a complete failure.
I don't know what I am more upset with. The fact that I fell for clever game mag hype or the fact that I tried to sell myself on this game even after I played it for the first few hours. I kept telling myself, it will get better, it will get better. The lack of decent combos, the poor game mechanics, and all out sheer boredom that this game wreaks can not be overcome. Between this game and Kakuto Chojin I was beginning to think that fighting games were only for other consoles. Thank god for Sould Calibur II.
