Thats the thing isn't it. Its not like transferring an emulator, or ROM. Transferring a dash or XBMC, if you forget something or something mucks up, you can stop your whole Xbox working. Then you'll be at that "modchip or hotswap" crossroads.

Back when i started to use the svn builds i renamed the file wrong and it woldent load my dash to get my dash back i just pop in evox slayers boot disc if you keep your settings to auto launch on disc drive it will still boot the disc first so you dont need your dash.
Now that the evox slayers disc has booted up you can use it just like a dash to ftp in to the xbox hdd and fix what you mucked up.
Just a tip incase you have that prob and want an ez fix befor you try a hot swop.
I did this with a mod chip i dont know if it works on soft mods or not.

That works if you dont have any settings but if you use the same userdata folder you dont need to reset your smb shares or any other settings and it just takes a few seconds.

I don't have it as a dash either and I've never bothered to update it. The version I have works fine, does what I need it to, so there's no reason for me to update. It doesn't use SMB share, connects with Xlink without any probs, so its fine.
I barely use XBMC anyway. Don't listen to music on it, only got 1 film on it. I just use it for games and emu's.

You transfer the folder to the same drive to start with.
For example, if your current XBMC is in: E:\Apps\XBMC
You move the new folder to E:\Apps\XBMC2
Run the .xbe in the XBMC2 folder and check it works. If it does, delete the E:\Apps\XBMC folder (the original one) and then RENAME the XBMC2 folder to E:\Apps\XBMC
From now on, that version should fire up just like the old one used to and you've successfully upgraded.
