I've had my Xbox (v1.6) for only around 4 months. In that time I had fun softmodding it and fiddling around. I took the softmod off because I wasn't happy with how cleanly I had installed it, being my first mod and all. I was, and still am interested in hardmodding. This seems to be my only option as of now, anyways. I'm thinking I need a modchip to fix my problem Sad I waited a day or two after cleaning my mods off my box before modding it again. Just being lazy. In this time my brother dropped the box. How fun... When I next try to do anything, I can go into the dashboard fine, but it won't read any discs. I get a disc-read error. my first thought, was naturally... My DVD-Rom is broken. (Phillips)

So after fiddling with it and finding out it doesn't work, I borrowed a friends xbox to do some experimenting. His XBox's DVD-Rom on mine gets the same problem. My DVD-Rom on his gets no problem. With the possibility of it being that out of the way, I have to naturally look at either any wires or the HDD. (Seagate???) The wiring seems to be fine, to me atleast, so I figured it was my HDD. Here's somethings I've noticed:

X "Network Settings" Hangs and goes to Service Required (Error 21)

X XBox Live "New Account" and "Accout Recovery" both Hang and go to Service Required (Error 21) (I've no XBox Live account and no intent of getting one)

X My box performs slower than usual

To me, it seems obvious, that the network settings is somehow causing my Xbox to not read discs. I could be wrong, but it's only what seems to be the obvious answer. After a little bit of studying this, I have found that some people find their xbox to read discs slower, or not at all, if their xbox is set to automatically detect the IP Address, instead of having the IP saved. Is there something about the xbox that makes reading discs dependent on the network settings? Something I'm not aware of? And is there anyway I can fix my xbox without a modchip? I'm not getting very far trying to find a way, but I was hoping maybe one of you could tell me I'm wrong and show me how.

I can't get my xbox to read any discs,
It's not modded anymore (why'd I take that damn mod off?) so I can't FTP to it, I can't hotswap (I've tried, I successfully hotswapped once before it broke, but I didn't backup the HDD, I only did the hotswap to see if I could, and to backup/install a new HDD at a later time. A backup would have been helpful, I could just install a new HDD and be done)

As for my current situation, can anyone help me?
It sucks having a broken xbox, but its so much more irritating being able to get into the dash and know it's still broken.

Thanks in advance,

Hiya

Are the games you are putting in xbox live games? are they set to auto try and connect? as this is the only reason i can see for it running slow.

I would try another HDD first and see if that helps, otherwise it could be the network controller on the motherboard. I would get a chip, try another HDD or and install ms dash and try that, if it don't work then I would maybe think about a new motherboard.
