Hello everyone, My first post here but I have been reading the site for awhile. Recently I thought it would be neat to install XBMC on my xbox. I read over a few tutorials and then decided I would give hot swapping a shot.
To make a long story short, my xbox now gives me error 7. Ive done some research and found that most commonly this is caused by the hard drive not being plugged in properly or a bad ide cable. I have checked the connections all are good, the hard drive is spinning, and the IDE cable is good. So I am thinking that i messed up the the harddrive. Since I would still like to have xbmc on my xbox I was wondering if it would be possible to get a mod chip and a new hard drive, and what I need to do to get started.
Here are my main questions:
1) If I buy a mod chip will it help me solve my problem?
2) If it will help, what mod chips do you recommend?
3) Will any hard drive work, well assuming it is IDE?
4) If I buy a new hard drive does it need anything preloaded on it?
5) If so how do I go about that?
Since this is my first xbox to mod, I may have ran way off course with the bad hard drive theory. Please put me on the right path.
Thanks in advance,

Welcome to the XBOX-HQ, we hope you enjoy this and all the other HQ sites we have to offer.
If the stock HDD still works you can use it with Chimp to set up the new HDD.
Thank you very much for the quick reply. I will look into this and post back soon.
Thanks again,

If you check it all out and still want a chip i would go with the xecuter 2.6 or xecuter 3 the X-3 is top of the line but is a bit of over kill and the X-2 is the best all around bang for the buck.
As long as the HDD is lockable and in the list the chip will fix all the problems you seem to be having.

After reading up and looking around at modchips/hard drives I decided the easiest way to fix my problem would be just to mod chip my xbox. Since I do not play xbox live I wasnt really worried about any of that. That being the case I installed a duo x2 gs and its been working great for me.(I could not find an x-2, but the duo was only 25 bucks so oh well ) I had an old hd laying around and after the 10 min chip install, and 10-15 min software install the xbox is up and running again.
Thanks for your help wes. After installing the chip I would defiantly recommend it to anybody who has an xbox. I have already had a few friends of mine bring me their old xbox wanting a chip installed. The chip went in easy on my v1.4 xbox although looked like there was a bit more solder work that would have to be done on a 1.6. Since I had never really soldered anything before I was pretty nervous to take the soldering iron to the xbox. After I was done it left me wondering how some people have messed it up. The D0 point did take me several attempts to get the wire to stay in place, but that could have had to do with me buring the heck out of my finger just seconds before attempting the joint.
I have installed several emulators and its been great having all those games in one box under the tv in the living area. Although I haven't figured out how to stream my media from my pc's to my xbox, I am sure I will figure it out soon enough though.
Anyway thanks again for the help wes,

Your more then welcome for the help since it is what I'm here for and what i love to do.
Still i got to say its good to hear that your doing a good job.
I was also happy to see you got your chip going with no hassle except the DO which i don't think is possible to get in the first shot. (Damn tiny point )
That page has a few ways to do it so I'm sure you will find one that will suit you.
