a big hello @ the HQ!
i was given an old xbox with many org. games as present and since then i visited this site to gather information.
many thanks to all you, who contribute your experience.
I read much and i already found out some things. yesterday i felt "ready" to do my first softmod
i used the softmod installer 5 and succesfully modded my box. it booted with evox as a dash. (or the original m$ with try open) after that i used the AID 4.2 to install XBMC and unfortunately i was stupid and chose "install as dash". now my box only boots to XBMC and i dont know how to boot EVOX. I dont even know, if it is still on the box I could not find anything when looking onto the box via ftp.
quesions, that are in my puzzled mind now:
- where did the SID 5.01 istall the evox-dash to?
- did i "overwrite" the evox-files with xbmc ? and if so can i reinstall all again and choose the right way to install xbmc (as application). If i do that, will there be "rests" of unused/unneeded files that use space on my hd?
- can i just copy the evox-dash to the filesystem (e.g. E:\evoxdash\) and then launch it from XBMC as an application? (when looking at the xbmc-menupoint "programms" it always tells me "Network-Server not found" *confused* )
Other question:
I dont think, that i am going to open the box for any chipping or HD-change...
- so will it be possible to copy games to a usb-hdd/smb-share and launch and play them from an "external" HD ?
and if the answer to the above question is no: where do i find a list with BIG hard-drives who are lockable? the list i already found had now BIG drives in it.
*EDIT*: I found the info/listing for the HDs. I was just 2 stupid 2 look at the right place ; - )) */EDIT*
i know that this is a long post... so if you read until here: thanks for reading ))
i am sooo proud, that i was able to mod the box, connect to the box via ftp, connect to smb-sources in my network etc. thanks to all the info here but i know, that i will have to learn a lot about my box
sorry for my bad english and greetings from sunny germany.

Welcome to the XBOX-HQ, we hope you enjoy this and all the other HQ sites we have to offer.
Congrats on the softmod and making it so far on your own, most need it all handed to them (not that thats a bad thing) but you seem to be breezing through it.
Q1: The evox dash should have installed to E/dash and no XBMC should not have over wrote the evox dash.
If you want Evox as an app just install the evox folder in the Apps section of the E: drive and launch it from the XBMC programs section.
Since you found the HDD info i guess this should cover what you need but if you need more info just let us know man.

hiho wes213,
thanks a lot for the superfast answer.
concerning EVOX: as far as i remember i have no e:/dash folder. but i will take a closer look when i get back home from work. If i cant find it, i will reinstall it as an app.
concerning HD: I already found a HD that fits to my needs and i found a tutorial her on the HQ how to change HD without a modchip. Ich think i will try this one ; - )
I still wonder, if it is possible to play games from an external usb-disc or smb-share?
concerning my questions on XBMC i will read the manual that i found first and then post the remaining questions. until now i just wonder about the "network-server not available" - message when accessing the "programms" menu...
thanks and greetz from sunny germany

Sorry man forgot to answer that one but no a nas drive or external Hdd will be way to slow to run a game from.
Movies and Apps will work from a nas but games send info at to high of a speed and would glitch at an unacceptable rate.

Hi,
I already thought, that it is not possible to run Games from an external HD... but its always good to ask to be sure ; - )
I spent the evening with my box and i have XBMC as a dash and EVOX as an app up and running. *lookingaroundveryproudandhappy*
Now i will read and learn about those 2 progs. I already found out, that a config-file is responsable for al the menus/functions in EVOX.
Until now i have not yet found a tutorial on configuring EVOX. So if anone has a nice tut about the EVOX config file etc. I will apreciate that a lot.

Hiho,
I contiued to deal with my xbox and bought a 500GB HD.
I already softmodded my box (see beginning of this thread) and i have XBMC on drive E as my standard dash while the original M$ dash remained on C.
Using the tutorial http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-185.html I tried to upgrade my HD.
Everything went fine and i was able to lock the HD...but unfortunately when putting the "new" HD into my Box only the M$ dash loads and when trying to load a game the box tells me it needs to be serviced : -((
When putting the org. HD into the box everything works.
Anybody knows what my mistake is?

Hiho wes,
unfortunately it does not give me an error code. It is just the M$-Dash in the Background and a window in the front telling me my box needs to be serviced and an OK button. When i press OK it just returns to the M$-dash.
I already thought it could be a dirty disc etc. but with the org. HD it works ?!?
When trying to boot the AI instead of a game it tells me, that it cant read the CD and asks is it was a game ;- )
*confused*

Finally !
It took me some time, but i finally found out what went wrong in my case:
The brand new harddisc i had was defect! It had some bad sectors it could sometimes read/write to them and sometimes not : -((
The HD came that way, so it was "dead on arrival", but having a defect, that occured sometimes and sometimes not, it was quite difficult to find it out. An HD-diagnose tool finally helped me. I really did not think about the HD, cause it was brand new :- ((
I exchanged the defective HD to a new one ... and guess what .... everything is fine !
So to all of you have perhaps may once have an error-message saying: "Your xbox needs to be serviced", which is just a window-layer with the M$ dash in the background without an error-code: It could be a problem with your HD
