First off. my xbox is chipped, but stopped being able to boot up with the chip enabled(screen completely black)
I assumed the chip was busted then decided to try the hotswap softmod so i could play my backup games. This didnt go well... didnt even get to altering the content of the drive. Anyway now my box boots with an error screen(error7).
Is there anyway to rescue my box?
Thought maybe theres a way to install a new harddrive without a backup of the old one... or better yet somehow rescue my original harddrive
Notes: I dont have the hdd password; i can't get past the bootscreen when the chip is enabled(shows evox logo top left then goes black)
New at this, so any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks

also... i've looked around for tutorials and found many but wasnt sure if any of them would solve my problem as most talk about having my HDD password or eeprom file or something. I DON"T HAVE THESE. So thought i could retrieve this info by creating a bootdisc of sorts? Is this possible?

Welcome to the HQ man, we hope you enjoy the site.
7 - kernel - HDD timeout
Most of the times, the IDE cable is not properly connected when you see this error. Please reattach the ide cable. Not only to the harddisk drive but also to the dvd drive. ALso try to reconnect the ide cable to the motherboard.
Press pretty hard so it goes all the way in. Make sure it is seated straight and proper in the drives and the motherboard. If you still have an error 7. Try another ide cable. If that won't work try another harddisk. If there is still no go, try to set the jumpers on the rearside of the harddisk drive. Set it to master or cable select.
Boot disk wont work if the chip is mucked and if its not softmoded.

Could you just explain to me how and what it is that freezing your HDD will do to fix anything besides cause condensation on the inside of it letting moisture in and ruining it?

Thanks for the feedback
Tried reconnecting it a number of times and a different ide cable, so definitely not that... Wanted to use a new hdd but in most the tuts and forums it mentions copying over the backup of my original drive or something about my eeprom, dont have backup or eeprom info...
Can i just install a new HDD and use a boot disk? The chip seems to be working as the box boots with the evox logo on the top left but then freezes(black screen, then flashing red and orange led, assuming due to the hdd problem)

If the prob with the chip is due to a bad hdd then you can use aid 4.20 (found here: http://www.aidtracker.com/ ) to install and set up a new hdd.
Should the chip be bad you can use xboxhdm and an eeprom reader to set up the new hdd.

awesome, after your advice and a couple phone calls i think i have my plan of action... 2 options
Buy new hdd(as HDD must be the problem)
Then either:
1. Connect it to the pc and use some sort of windows based xbox HDD
prep tool(still looking for one) to prepare it for the xbox through my pc
then put it back into the xbox
OR
2. Dowload the smallest possible bootable dash to enable me to install the
dash to the new drive.
Due to my bandwidth cap i'm looking for the smallest downloads possible to complete the task... otherwise would use AID. I only need to be able to play my back-ups so all the added apps aren't neccesary for me. Any suggestions as to which dash i should download(ie smallest reliable one)?

If you want to build the HDD from your PC i wold go with xboxhdm : http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/download-file-1138.html and if the chip is working fine then all you will need to do is follow the on screen text for a larg HDD build.

The hdd arm spindle spins 50 m.p.h over the hdd platers, by mear nanometers, if bumped the spidle could scratch the platers, cause that sector on the disk to be unreadable, freezing it shinks the the platters makign the hdd, be able to read h the platers they the heat make it expands again, but u have to put in the bag, to protect it from the condensation.

So what your saying is it will fix nothing and only work for vary few sec. it takes to warm up in a hot box we call xbox.
You ever take a cold dry can out of the fridge and let it set, it builds condensation since its a cold object hitting warm air.
No amount of bagging will stop that.

Ok. I bought a new hard drive and then used slayers auto installer. Everything went well but noticed some games now appear not to run as smoohly as they should. So will try another HDD.
Also attemted to rescue the original drive by getting the eeprom file but when trying to unlock it it just gives errors so i assume the drive is physically damaged. So now i might as well try the freezing!! just to find out if this myth is real!
