Yesterday I soft-modded my Xbox with “Deluxe v5.01” - absolutely no problems. I used the Action Replay/SID5/Splinter Cell NTSC install combination and everything goes down as per the instructions. I wake up this morning and find my kids (8 and 4) are joyriding with their old Xbox classic games – I think nothing of it. However, when I sit down to configure my NAS and XBMC this afternoon – I find I can’t get past the MS dash or reinstall using the softmod hack. What gives folks – I backed everything up – but I can’t get to a recovery tool? Did my boys kill my newly soft-modded Xbox, or is there a simple work around I have not read about yet?

Did you install a single boot install and did you back the eeprom .bin file to your PC?

Good deal man so few back up the eeprom to the PC anymore.
If the light around the eject button is green then the soft mod is not working at all and you wont be able to boot aid 4.10.
What you can do to fix it is use xboxhdm, you wold need a copy of the MS dash and your eeprom file.
Once you have xboxhdm on your PC you will see a C folder and you put the MS dash backup in it.
Then put the eeprom file in the eeprom folder of xboxhdm and make an ISO out of it.
You wont be doing all the steps in this guide but its mostly self explanatory and this will build your xbox hdd back to stock so you can resoftmod it.
http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html like i said this guide is for installing a larger hdd but will give you an idea of how xboxhdm works and you should see the options you need to set up the hdd to stock, unlock the hdd to start and don't forget to lock it when you are done.

Thanks for this Wes, I appreciate your time with this.
I have the XBOXHDM 1.9 disc burned and ready to go, but WAPITA.
Anyway, perhaps this is a good time to dig into this project a little deeper (the white rabbit just came by to chat), so before I end up down this rabbit's hole, maybe you can answer a couple of quick questions...
1) If any recovery effort requires I mount a HDD to a PC - and I already have all of the system files backed up - isn't this a opportune time to swap out the 8 GB disk for a larger disk?
2) Further, I suspect this problem may occur again with a kids + soft-mod install - are there any reliability/performance/recovery advantages if I add/install a Xecuter 3 CE chip?
3) Lastly, if I eventually want to connect to the console via a wireless link -is there recommended wireless hardware solution I should implement once I have the console apart?
Best,

Its no prob man, I'm here to help as much as i can for anyone that needs it.
1 yes, this is a real good time to add a big hdd and i wold try to stay under 300GB since you run in to probs if one of your drives go over 250GB.
2 Yes the X3 chip wold help since no matter what the kids do to it it can boot aid and be fixed with way less of a hassle.
3 If you can find an xbox wireless game router they work well for this, i ran my PC off a wireless card for a long time and had the xbox hooked to a linksys router and it did fine.
If you need any more info on any of this just let me know man.

Wes – I wanted to make sure I tell you how much I appreciate your help on this - you saved me from a lot of unnecessary grief and wasted time.
I successfully restored my v1.3 machine over the weekend with a retired motherboard / components combination I use as bench – the backup data and tools in xboxhdm 1.9 were all I needed.
However, I did take the opportunity to install a larger drive – I went to a Barracuda 7200.10 750GB Seagate drive (was $129.00, so how can you not?), I formatted “G” and “F” using 32k clusters with XBpartitioner – the box is running quiet and cool thus far…
