what were the static IP details you used, if they're incorrect thats why you couldnt connect. Switching to DHCP is the easy fix, would have been helpful to know what IP and subnet mask you used originally were.
Google for the downsizing of game discs, there are certain files you can remove that lower the disc image size so it will fit on a 4.3GB dvd disc
