i've got an xbox with a toasted hard drive. from what i understand my only reasonable option is to get a mod chip and a new drive. once i've got these, what do i do? what goes on the drive and where can i get it? do i have to get the hard drive key off the eeprom and re-lock the drive?

What kind of chip do you have? You need to install the chip, flash a bios then get AID and install a dash and your apps.

install mod chip (x3ce)
install new H/D

flash chip with bios for your xbox
eg x3 3294 for v1.0 to v1.5 xboxs
x3 3294 v16 plus for v1.6 v1.6b xboxs
download auto installer deluxe 4.01 as well as auto install deluxe 4.02 update pack
update 40.1 to 4.02 using updater app
burn it to a dvd-r
boot with it in xbox format new hard drive the install MS dsah as well as nomebrew dash like XBMC
