I was wondering if anyone can help me out.

I am looking into getting an xbox and modding it. I've heard that certain versions of the xbox are better than other for modding. Some say that some don't read burned DVD's...

is any of this true? should I buy one version xbox over another? and should I be looking out for a certain DVD in that xbox?

thanks for any help you can throw out at me!

hi bordello,

Welcome to the site mate.. Smile

ok lets explain really simply for you..

There are 3 x XBOX DVDROM drives that a xbox could have.
- Samsung
- Thompson
- Phillips

All these xbox dvdrom readers play dvd's fine but they are pretty picky on which brands.. I will link you to a tutorial about what XBOX DVDROM reads which media.. Hope this helps.

Only the SAMSUNG Drive will read cdr's.. Thats what i have.
All other drives will read CDRW but again you have to find the right brand for your xbox dvd rom drive.. I normally found the cheapest dvd-r and cdrw used to work on my phillips/thomson when i had them before..

dvd drives and best type of media:

Somewhere on this site there is a tutorial that gives you different ways to determine what version xbox you have. I have a feeling if it hasn't been updated, it probably should be.

The Xbox Versions range from 1.0 to 1.6

In my opinion the best way is to open your machine and take a look at the chip to see what you have.

Some chip names are:
Conexant
Focus
Xcalibur

If you have the Conexant Video Chip, now check if you have a fan on the GPU. If you have a fan, you have a version 1.0 Xbox. If you don't have a fan, now you must check the power connection on the motherboard. See if it has one row of pins or two rows of pins. If it has one row of pins, then you have a 1.1 version Xbox. If it has two rows of pins, then you have a 1.2 or a 1.3.

Now, if you have a focus chip, then you have a 1.4 or a 1.5 version. Like the 1.2 and 1.3 visually there is no difference. However, with the 1.4 versus 1.5 there is a way to determine which you have. Check between continuity between the number 2 LPC hole on the MB and any ground. If you have continuity you have a 1.4 if not it's a 1.5.

If you have the Xcalibur chip, god be with you. No, kidding. 1.6's are very chippable.

I hope that info helps. There are supposedly serial number methods out there, but not sure how reliable. To determine between 1.2 and 1.3 if it is a do or die situation, you can use serial methods in conjunction with what I just typed out.

later man
