Let me start off by saying thanks.
I am a newbie when it comes to modding the xbox I have been reading this site for months getting all the information I can before I start. I don't know if it can be done but here you go.
I want to softmod my xbox and use AID but I was wondering if you can do it without using the OEM HD from the xbox. Basically I want to mod an 80GB HD but at any time be able to put my oem xbox HD back into my xbox and it would act like it wasn't touched / modded.
My ideas if possible Make a back-up of my Oem HD using evox on my PC than setting up the new 80GB through my PC. Than installing the 80GB in the xbox and softmodding the xbox from there. I read the tutorial by pirrup about upgrading HD with pc in softmodded xbox but wanted to upgrade the HD before the softmod.
I know the xbox won't recognize the 80GB without it being softmodded but was wondering if it could work.

nope it can't work because you need an eeprom backup.
Just curious don't you have to make an eeprom back-up on a new HD when you upgrade. That is not possible to do without the softmodded xbox?

In order to gain the access needed to do anything with an Xbox other than it's original programming, one must softmod or chip mod. To do anything else would simply make the Xbox a brick. The EEPROM and HDD are married to each other. You will need to be able to extract the key and unlock it if you are trying to access anything on the original HDD. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

here's the simplest way i can say this.
to install a new hdd you must have eeprom backup, to get that you must use a softmod. here's my little tutorial to you.
well, well, well, here comes something you must remember.
so, you want to softmod a new big 80 gig hard drive and not touch your stock, first you'll need stuff i mean stuff, here's a list.
1.- Action Replay or a way to get softmod exploit to a memory card.
2.- Game that's gonna be use for exploit. (i recomend Agent Underfire, since my installer offers simplicity on installing softmods.)
3.- ftp access to xbox (explained later).
4.- xbxhdm 1.9 (xbox hard drive manager 1.9)
5.- a desktop PC.
6.- other stuff is left for you (AID disc, etc....).
here's the main IDEA!
your gonna run a softmod exploit installer, but not install it, so therefor you'll have ftp access to your xbox from that gamesave booted, and that gamesave should allow you to backup your eeprom, and ftp it to your pc along with the files from C and E drive.
step 1: getting the gamesave to your memory card could be tricky, but you'll find tutorials on that here on xbox-hq.
step 2: booting the exploit, will give you access to a modified unleashx dashboard that will allow you to backup your eeprom(not sure if SID does this, but mine does) and ftp access(you might need to adjust you ftp values, yet another tutorial to read).
step 3: once it's booted and you have your eeprom, now you'll ftp with IE or any ftp of choice, by default, the user name and password should be "xbox".
step 4: ftp your C drive files(dashboard files), E drive files (this is so you can have your gamesaves trasftered to your new hdd, and it's optional), and your "eeprom.bin", now this could be tricky to find, but here's a hint: E:\UDATA\game#\folder\folder., now this doesn't say it, but example on my 007 installer would be like. E:\UDATA\4541000d\000000000000\eeprom\backup.
and that is using custome built-in evox to back it up.
step 5: extract the .zip file that you downloaded called "xbxhm1.9" and make sure you make a sole directory to it. like xbxhm1.9\extracted files, and then you'll see buch of stuff there, you must read another tutorial on it found here in xbox-hq. your eeprom will go in linux\eeprom, and of course your C to linux\C, and E to duh...... well, once you have that done, you'll have to create an ISO wit the batch file.
step 6: once that iso is done, burn with nero, or other iso burning program, and turn off computer, take out your linux disc, get your new hdd(for xbox) ready. plugin your 80 gig hdd to IDE 1, in primary master, and make sure no other drives are plugged in, except for dvd/cd-rom, and the new hd, and then your jumper setting for the 80 gig hdd should be on CS (cable select) and now you'll boot your linux disc, and lock and build your new hd, read a tutorial on that also (kingroach made a good one at xbox-scene, and it's the 1 that i used).
step 7: once that's done, you should be able to just pop your new 80 hdd, and it will be like stock....no mod yet, but then you can softmod and done.
there more to it, but this pretty much says it all, good luck, and remember there's help in the VIP chat, it's worth it.
