OK, I used softmod installer deluxe 2 and Splinter cell to softmod my xbox and it worked a treat, many many thanks to the maker.
Now reading through various xbox forums I am getting worried about 2 things
Do I need to worry about the "clock loop" problem or new games messing up the softmod, I read a forum message that says mid-2004 and later games zap the softmod and leave the xbox useless, is this true?

Some games (if your xbox is hooked to an internet connection) will attempt to update via xbox live and can f*%& up your softmod. _________________ Xbox v1.0

so its only if im not connected to the net they can't mess it up?
I have my Xbox connected directly to my PC to use Xlink and XBconnect,
can the games access xbox live with this setup? or would they only be able to connect to live if I connected my Xbox directly to my Router?

If you can access xlink kai and such the your xbox IS connected to the net. Only way to be certain it isnt is to unplug anything from the ethernet port on the xbox....... _________________ Xbox v1.0

You can use it just be careful....anysigns of a game updating or anything unplug that cord as quick as you can and pray you can reboot alright.....usually wont update unless you go into xbox live stuff (ie multiplayer, download levels, etc) _________________ Xbox v1.0

erm..... You usualy DON'T have to worry about LIVE! games updating your XBOX and destroying your softmod, as most bioses used automaticaly block LIVE! from accesssing your console (Which is implemented to prevent banning). You can use X-Link Kai without any risks.

Well,
It seems to me all you have to do is copy your softmodded xbox's C & E drive & make a XBOXHDM cdr boot disk just in case. Still, it is kind of a pain in the ass to take your xbox & computer apart to rebuild your hd .

Also, if you're playing games off the harddrive or backups, just make sure to delete dashupdate.xbe (or similiar files) and bam, no more problems. That file is an installer for the most current dashboard (at the time of the games release), and without it, it can't do anything to your box. The name is usually that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it varied sometimes. Usually acl files delete them as part of their run.
