I've looked around for this and i found that you can use a crossover cable to sytem link and ftp. I also know that is pretty much the same thing as a system link cable, but i was wanting to know if i can FTP with a xbox system link cable.
TIA.

one more question, Is there anyway i can uprgrade my HDD without having to FTP. I have a 1.6 box or atleast thats what it says in XBMC and chimp isn't working right with it. I just can't get it to FTP now that i'm on vista. I've gotten it to work on XP like 2 years ago but now i don't have access to XP. So I was wondering if there is any method where i don't have to FTP. (willing to buy modchip.) I already have a compatible 500gb hdd.

If your running a router you can use cat5 and a crossover cable but strait xbox to PC you need crossover AKA xbox system link cable.
You can use xboxhdm to build a stock drive with your eeprom backup then soft mod the new HDD.
With out a copy of your old HDD on your PC you will need to start from scratch.

MAKE YOUR BOOTABLE XBOXHDM CD IMAGE
1. Unpack xboxhdm_v1.9
2. After you unpack you find this files under xboxhdm folder:
a. linux ( folder)
b. cygwin1.dll
c. make-DOS-floppy.bat
d. make-iso-lin.sh
e. make-iso-win.bat
f. mkisofs.exe
g. rawrite.exe
h. also some other readme files.
3. Copy files for xbox C:\ drive from slayers disk and put the files in xboxhdm's linux>C
folder.
4. You can also copy any E:\ drive files to linux>E folder.
5. copy your xbox's eeprom.bin to linux>eeprom folder
6. Double click on make-iso-win.bat, it will bringup command prompt and dump the bootable
iso same folder.
SETUP YOUR COMPUTER AND XBOX:
1. Put you cd/dvd drive in primary slave and xbox hard drive in primary master ( I didnt
tested with secondery master and slave).
Once you have it set up and you boot the xboxhdm disk select (i think 1) boot VGA console.
Now you just need to select build a new xbox HD from scratch.

Personally i would install a chip and download Auto Installer DEluxe.
It will auto format your new hdd or you can choose it manually.
Then you can install whatever you want and lock the hdd.
