Post subject: error 21 after One Click Install (AID 3.1)

Ok, I'm a noob, but I thought I was doing ok until tonight.

I bought a pre-modded xbox off ebay. It came with UnleashX on it, and once I got hold of AID 3.1 I got other things like XBMC running fine.

What I wanted to do was make xSelect the default dash, so I could boot into XBMC by default, but choose other things if I wanted to.

So I used AID 3.1 to backup my savegames - all I thought I needed to do - and then used the One Click Install to install xSelect.

When I rebooted, I got error 21. After looking around on here I saw the posts that talked about re-installing the M$ dash. So I rebooted to AID 3.1 and reinstalled the M$ dash.

Now when I reboot, I still get error 21, but worst of all, my AID 3.1 disc wont boot! I thought that would be my saviour, that I could always boot AID, but alas I can't! :<

So guys, what can I do?

I don't know anything about how the xbox was modded, I assume it's a chip, but it could be a softmod - there was a Mech Assualt savegame called "Install Linux" or something similar.

Should I be posting this in the newbie forum instead?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Well the first thing you need to do is see if you are able to run regular games on your xbox. If so, you need to get the original non platinum mech assault game and load up the linux save. It will boot you to it and there you can remove all softmods and then reinstall everything and make it like new.

If you cannot boot reg. games, then you will need to either get a chip, or do a hotswap. Now hotswaps are tricky and you have to be precise on doing it. If not you will have a dead weight. No matter what Gus says abou tit, it IS tricky to screw up. If you don know much about computers or xboxes, I suggest getting a chip or finding someone near you to fix it.

This is some of the locations of the HQ modders.

Ok, just tested a retail game, and it works fine. Phew!

I'm quote comfortable with computers, and have been putting them together from parts for 10 years or so, it's just xboxes I'm new to :>

I have been reading about xboxhdm, can I rebuild my xbox drive with that? From what I've read it looks like it. It looks like all I need is the MS Dash, which I think I saw somewhere around here.

I'd rather not have to try and find a retail Mech Assault, I'm guessing they're kinda rare by now. If I can do it with xboxhdm that would be much better.

Xboxhdm is mainly for hdd upgrades. It can be used for returning your xbox back to new, but you will need the msdash and put it in the C drive of the xboxhdm. There should be instructions somewhere on rebuilding your C drive. But I would rather just get the mech assault game and not risk messing up your computer and xbox. With the game, all you have to do is remove the softmod and restore the msback, if you backed it up in the first place. and if not, you can just ftp to your xbox once in the modded menu and fix it from there. It is simpler that way. BUt the choice is yours.

ok, I've got the ms dash and xboxhdm and the tutorial, I'll burn it to disc and try it out tomorrow. At least I can do it with what I have here already. Otherwise it means waiting a few days to track down MA.

Thanks for the advice.

Having thought about it overnight, I'm not sure if I could do the softmod without first going the xboxhdm route, because the AID one click install has totally wiped my C drive, so the linux install savegame wont be there will it?

But maybe I just don't understand how softmodding works. Without FTP access (which I assume is only provided by non-MS dashboards) how do you get the hacked savegame on there in the first place? I'll do some reading.

I think I'm going to have to do the softmod thing once I've recovered my drive with xboxhdm anyway, because all I'm installing is the MS dash, which will still not let me boot unsigned code. Or does the xboxhdm do more than that?

I have the savegame on my pc, in a backup folder, but I don't think it's on the xbox anymore. I also don't have MA, it didn't come with the xbox.

I am about to try the xboxhdm with uxe 2.2 complete package and see where that gets me.

ok, stage one of the softmod done, hd restored, exploited, and I can now boot to the evox dash. EEPROM is backed up, now I'm at the stage I should have been at before I started messing around so much!

Was my problem that I thought I was using a chipped box, but it was only softmodded? So when I did the one click install on AID 3.1 it overwrote the softmod stuff, hence the no boot?

What I was trying to do, and what I still want to do, is install xselect as my main dash, is this possible with the uxe 2.2 xboxhdm softmod method?

You can install Xselect yes.. But why?? lol
I only run one dashboard and its XBMC... You dont need much else.

If you want you can install the other dashboards as applications and boot them from your apps/programs menu.

but either way you can do what you like.

just my 2 cents

Yeah, maybe you're right. If XMBC can load all the other dashboards I might want to mess with as apps, then I don't need xselect I guess.

Really you can load any dashboard as a default dashboard (startup) and then just install the others as applications.. They will work either way.

hope ive been some help.

could you point me to a tutorial that explains how to change the dashboard that the softmod loads?

Searching the site for "change dashboard" or "change dash" returns 0 results.

I've got AID 3.1 - can you do it from there?

well.. Correct me if im wrong anyone but i belive a softmod is no different to a modchip install when you talking about dashboards etc.

Your xbox will normally boot and look for evoxdash.xbe on the F:\ drive E:\ drive and then C:\ drive (in that order).

So if you replace your dashboard using AIDELUXE from the softmods menu it should be fine..

Just remember if you have a SOFTMOD you can only install dashboards from the softmod section.

MODCHIP only from the modchip area.
