Right. I've tried lots and read lots. Is it possible to hotswap using an external usb>ide connetion? I've not seen it discussed before but this page says it's possible.
My computer doesn't have old-style ide cables. So conventional hotswapping won't work. I've got no buddies with chipped xboxes. I've just destroyed my only control pad in an attempt to make a usbflash disk-pseudo memory card, to load up the splinter-cell exploit (second time lucky, I buy the correct version).
Action replay is a lot of money. Can I load up a linux distro and do what I need to do, through the USB>ide?
(Before I just throw the whole lot in the bin...?)

I am not quite sure. Considering that your computer is obviously fairly recent, I would assume the bios supports "Boot other Device/Boot USB". It all depends on whether xboxhdm realizes it is there. I would like to know myself, being a hotswap promoter, and having a UBS->IDE cable myself. Just a tip though, unplug the DVD drive, and turn on the xbox. As soon as it FRAGs (Flashes Red And Green) do the swap. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to load an audio CD, etc. With this method, you should make it in about 3 tries. _________________

Stop me if I'm talking out of my a**. It's been a long time since I used to keep up with all this...
Anyway, it's a dell e520, all SATA I believe. There is one grey ide-type cable, but it's attached to the motherboard, and then to some kind of control board.
I did try hotswapping using the USB>ide a couple of times (I used the old music-copied-to-harddrive method. Does it not work? Anyway, I got a few shocks, so I decided to give up and try the usb controller. I ended up snapping that in frustration after many hours.
And now I'm back to this...

And that's even more expensive than the action replay...
The website says it's possible...just wondered if anyone else has actually managed it?

Alright, I could get a cheaper one from ebay (locally sata>ide is like $40 - i'm not in the US tho)...but, this was all supposed to be nice and easy, and I'm spending lots of money, I don't have.

That's a nice idea, and thanks for the tip. But waaaay beyond my technical abilities. Soldering got me into lots of trouble today (nearly had it using my mp3 player as a memory card) and I don't want to be dripping hot solder over my motherboard. I've only owned it for 3 days. Ha.

So I cut up a male>female usb cable and solder the non-female end to points on the control pad. Plugged in the mp3 player. Xbox recognises it and then formats it. All good. Plug into laptop. AR software doesn't recognise it. Read tuts and get it working. Copy splintercell save over to memory card. Transfer it to xbox. Just reformats the card. Try it again, and I noticed that if I plugged it into the xbox after reformatting it, it still wasn't being read. So I figured my soldering was to blame. Tried to improve it. Ended up destroying controller.
the end

Yep. I am unlucky. And that was the link I gave in the previous post. I was attempting a variation discussed in the comments. You see, I had a controller, but no memory card. Now I have neither. God damn it. Aarrghhhh!

Hey man if you're no good at soldering and your xbox doesn't have the Sharp TSOP chip then you can do the TSOP mod with an electro conductive pen, but only if the TSOP chips not a Sharp cause they have to have another wire ran to em to boost the voltage enough for it to work. _________________
