EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
After upgrading hard drive, games would not load properly. Solution was to clear E:\Cache folder. All games work fine now.
BACKGROUND:
I softmodded my xbox with Thompson DVD drive, and it works perfectly. It plays all backups from DVD or from the stock hard drive. I used SID 3 from the splinter cell hack. I then used the Aid 2.1 disk to install the unleashx dash.
THE STORY:
All has been well and I've been as happy as can be. Then I decide to try to upgrade my hard drive, since it seems so easy in the tutorials.
So, first I get an 80gb Maxtor that I've been using as a backup drive (it has worked flawlessly for 3 months- no weird sounds or errors)... made sure it was lockable. Checked several databases... all said lockable. So I get the xboxhdm 1.9 file.
Next, I follow the tutorials exactly (I'm an engineer) with xboxhdm 1.9. Had trouble locking because I named my eeprom file "EEPROM.BIN" just like the tutorial said. Turns out, linux is case sensitive, so I had to reburn the iso with lowercase "eeprom.bin". That seemed to work fine.
So now I had a locked 80gb hard drive that had all my C and E files on it... plus the F drive. I popped it into the xbox, and it started the UnleashX dashboard first time. I thought, "Wow! That WAS simple!" I was wrong.
So I copied a game to the hard drive (F:) and tried to run it. Now keep in mind that in the old stock xbox hard drive, I did this (it would only hold 1 game), and it worked fine.
When running the game from the hard drive, (ghost recon3) it would start to load from the hard drive, then when it got to the part where I press Start to continue (just before the screen where it looks for saved player profiles on the hard drive), it REBOOTS THE XBOX TO THE UNLEASHX DASH.
ATTEMPTS MADE TO SOLVE PROBLEM:
1) Tried running the backup game from the DVD. Same problem occurs: game reboots at "press start to continue" screen.
2) Tried running original game. Works fine.
3) Tried running other backup games (from DVD and from new 80gb hard drive): Same problem
4) Tried copying game to E: drive where it worked fine in the stock hard drive: Same problem
5) Unlocked 80gb hard drive, repeated entire process. Re-ftp'd all files from C and E drive, reburned linux.iso. This time I used a different media and burned at a slower rate. Booted in computer and made xbox hard drive from scratch again. Locked it, seemed everything went fine. Tried it in the xbox and got the same error.
6) Swapped back to original hard drive: No problems at all.
7) Checked all settings from dash: F drive enabled. Games detected from dash, all looks fine. Tried reinstalling UnleashX dash... same problem.
8) Tried to re-soft mod both with the AID 2.1 disk and via the splintercell hack (SID 3). Did not solve problem. I made sure to use the unleashx for large hard drives (E+F), installed to C: from the "softmods/dashboards" menu option.
9) Tried running MS dash from new hard drive: same problem (both when playing from DVD or hard drive)
10) Did full error checking on hard drive prior to installation... checking for bad sectors, etc. No problems detected.
THEORIES:
Could be a soft mod issue. The hard drive seems to be married to the motherboard successfully, since games start to load and dashboard is working fine.
I'm tempted to try cloning the hard drive from the original to see if that helps, or using SID 4.0 to see if that solves the problem.
Does anyone else have anything to add? Has anyone ever experienced this before? I tried searching the forums... one guy said that some of his games didn't work after upgrading his hard drive, but a resolution wasn't posted to the thread.
Sorry to post this in the General category- but there was not a category for HDD upgrades. Thanks

Thank you for your quick reply.
I checked the E drive, and cleared all files in the CACHE folder. The X, Y, and Z drives have files on them, but there wasn't a CACHE folder. Being unsure as to if you meant to clean the entire X, Y, and Z drives, or just look for a cache folder, I didn't touch them.
Instead, I tried the games after clearing the E:\CACHE folder. As it turns out, that solved the problem! It's distressing that nowhere in the tutorial, readme, or anything I've found online mentions clearing the cache folder. I hope I didn't overlook it somewhere... it would have saved me about 8 hours work.
I haven't tried running a game from the hard drive yet- but the backup DVD's seem to be working fine. If there are no further replies to this thread, please consider this problem resolved thanks to Hellblazer55.

Now knowing the solution, I went back and searched the forums for "cache" and I've found several of your posts that instruct people to clear the cache where they had similar issues.
It makes sense- the cache points to a different drive letter than where the game currently resides. The game doesn't try to hit the cache until the "press start to continue screen" in most games. But without that piece of knowledge, the solution doesn't seem so easy to come by.
I bet this would solve a lot of people's problems in this area. Perhaps they'll include a sentence in xboxhdm 2.0 to clear the cache...
