Ok, I have right now an old matrix modchip, and obviously it doesnt support larger than 137~gb hard drives and there never was any other bios update for it.
I just bought a nice 250gb hd, and I assume to fully use its vast offerings, I will simply have to softmod it.
Since my current, old xbox is already modded since like 2001 and happilly running xbmc as a dashboard, do I just use the aid3.0 to softmod it and thats it?
Do I have to lock the hd using xboxhdm too?
Halp plz.

Since you have a modchip installed it will be simple..
This is what i would do.
1. Leave your modchip fitted
2. Install the new LARGER HDD and format and partition it with AID..
Dont worry that you cant get all of your space just yet.. We will get it later..
3. Once you have installed your new larger hdd and installed all the apps, dashboards and locked it (with the correct keys) you should then softmod it. (at this stage you would only have C, E, F and not a G yet)
4. I would then install PBL or NKPATCHER which loads the bios of the hdd when it starts and it will then support the G drive and larger hdd's on boot..
This way once you have it softmodded you can then format you G:\ drive and get the rest of your space.. See what i mean..??
You can keep the modchip fitted all the time too so if you have probs you can always boot AIDeluxe.
hope that helps.. Softmod is fine sure but chips are always good for recovery..
