I have a new 2005-07-30 manufactured PAL XBOX and was wondering what version it is, and whether it is safe to install an X3CE? All of the version guides I can find are older than my manufacture data so I am not sure how correct they are. All sites seem to indicate a v1.6 (not 1.6b), but I was wondering if mine should actually be a 1.7?
I am a complete noob so please excuse me if this is a simple question. I have searched the forum and found nothing that varifies my model.

its definatly either a 1.6 or later.. (there really isnt an edition above 1.6)
so yes, it is indeed safe (and highly recommended) that you install that X3CE RIGHT AWAY!!

Thanks for replying. XC3E ordered and should be installed next week.
As I said above, I am a complete noob so can somone please clarify that the steps I will take are correct.
1). Install the X3CE.
2). Flash 3294v16plus bios to pos 1234 (dip switches set to on,on,off,off,off.
3). Load AID3 ISO disc (already burned to dvd-r) and format new hard disk / intsall apps (XBMC, DVD2XBOX and Enigma in my case).
4). Have a play before deciding what else to load.

if you meant to hit the main points of each, yeah, thats exactly what you need to do. Of course each thing has its own set of tasks, but it looks like you know what your talking about..
