Well, that depends on what kind of mod you have.

If you have a chip, then AID of course is the way to go. You just slap in the new blank HDD, pop in AID, boot and AID gets 'er done.

If you have a softmod, however, it's not that easy. Just backup your EEPROM, and the rest of your drive (if you so wish), make the ISO, plug your drive into the computer, boot with XBHDM, blah blah blah blah blah. It's a pain. I've done it numerous times, and it blows. Go with a chip if you can and AID. It's a Piece of Cake.

You cannot upgrade the HDD in a softmod by running a program on the xbox. Because the drive that you're throwing in needs to be locked to the Xbox you're playin with. Chimp and COnfig magic are upgrade programs more pushed towards chip owners.

I used to be a softmod freak. I know them inside and out, and thought they were the king chit. Now i have an Xecuter 2.6CE. And dont get me wrong, those softmods are BADASS; but there's so much more you can do with a chip.

Not to mention, that chip can save your ass if you mess up. If you mess up with a softmod, you're doomed unless you can get a chip, or are a champ at the ol' hotswap.
