I'm coming up to speed on the softmod'ing scene, and would like to understand how the dual boot / tray state functionality works. What files are involved (c:/SID/ ???). Does something in the c:/SID directory point to c:/xboxdash.xbe if the tray is closed and to some other file if it open?

Just trying to wrap my brain around the whole picture.

BTW... SID and AID ROCK!!!

Hey Sparcie,

If you startup your xbox and you leave your tray open, you don't come into the EvoX, Unleash or another program, but It'll startup The Softmod menu, it's just the savegame from Mechassault or another.
If you leave your tray closed you just enter the Normal evox menu.
If you don't want to open the Softmod menu, you can indeed mess in your C:\SID there is an open en close file, these will bring up the menu.
If you copy your close to another directory and there rename it to Open, and then copy it back, it overwrites the original open file.

If you done that you don't have the TRAY OPEN menu anymore, because both "open" and "close" will close the menu and then your normal Evox menu will startup.

Greetings Will

Thanks Masterwill for the reply Very Happy

A few more questions...

Does the open.bin file point to the default.xbe file in the exploited game save directory?

And does the close.bin point to c:/xboxdash.xbe or to a bios hack file?

What tool would one use to edit or create a "open or close.bin"?

What are the files in the c:/SID directory? Are they the bios hacks or the nkpatcher?

This is an excellent question. I have been wandering the same thing. I modded mine last weekend and have played around with it a bit. (restoring the back-up a few times as well ) Very Happy
But what I would like to find out how to do is boot to evox with tray open and msdash with it closed. Then also set a password for the evox configuration options (just in case my son or friends try to change anything) Any info would be helpful for a newbie Very Happy

open.bin and close.bin are bios files used for the pbl (Phoenix Bios Loader), which is now very obselete.

Tray state functions in a certain way, and when it's detected, you can set your optoins via pbl or nkpatcher or some other hack.

pbl has a boot.cfg file that defines what bios.bin file to load up acording to tray state.

same for nkpatcher and same for dual-habibi/retail.

so it's not like "closed=xboxdash.xbe" and "open=dash".

It's more like closed/open=tray state, than your exploit detects it and what ever you compile for it to load, it's what it's going to do.

I guess I need to get with the times...

I am still using AID101 and SID2.0.... I guess it is because I want to see all of the problems others are having with AID3.0 and SID4.5 before loading it up... and I am just used to the software after using it for so long. Thanks for the nfo.

I altered the config.xml in sid and disabled the menu items by replacing them with some info on who modded their box and how to contact me. (Plus a little plug to HQ) Which works for me.

but, your saying that if I was to edit the boot.cfg file then I would be able to define a path on what to boot in the open tray state?

Here is a copy of my boot.cfg file:

Romfile closed.bin
AltRomfile open.bin
RC4Key 0x57
EEPROMKey1_0
EEPROMKey1_1
EEPROMKey1_6

I took out all of the hex next to the EEPROMKey's and RC4Key just in case somebody could.... well, you know. (CYA)

If I were to change the "AltRomfile open.bin" to "AltRomfile closed.bin" then it would probably do the same thing as changing the name of closed.bin to open.bin and replacing the file, right? So how are you able to edit the boot.cfg to boot a different path? Since the open.bin is a "Romfile" and romfiles are just .bin's then I would have to create my own??? I am going to open up the open.bin file after I get home and see what's going on in there.
