I want to find out once and for all if my machine is chipped (as I suspect it is) or softmodded. I just took the lid off the box but before I go further could someone tell me where to look and what to look for.

If it does turn out to be chipped does that mean I can fit a new bigger hard drive without much fuss?

Well in order to determine if you xbox is chiped theres a certain area you just look in which is usually under the dvd rom drive ill upload a pic of a mother board with a square highlighting the area it should be in. I will just be a sec.

Ok this is where the mod chip should be located in the red square area. I know it might not be the same motherboard as yours but its pretty much the same location.

Thanks for the quick reply. It appears it is chipped as I suspected. It has an Apple-xv1 Pro if that means anything to you guys. It looks like this:

http://www.apple-chip.com/index/applex_vi_pro.html

The next thing I want to know is how to update the BIOS as people have often told me to do. Bioschecker and evox say bios unknown at the moment.

Finally, can someone tell me if I can just put in a new bigger hard drive like the ones sometimes sold on ebay with dashboards etc pre loaded or is it more invoved than just taking one out and putting another in?

Thanks again for any help
