I do not want to play on xbox live!!! I bought a 250gb western digital harddrive. My mother board is already modded up with a softmod ( note I do not have a chip) . Does my new hard drive have to be LOCKED to burn games onto it? And if I do need to lock it in order to use it (to burn games on it) can the new version of evox lock it without going through the eeprom/hd key etc?

I'm not a softmod expert, but i think all softmods need a locked hdd to boot the ms dash. I'm not sure with this new SID 4.0/4.5.
No, to burn games your hdd can be unlocked or locked. And yes, evox can lock and unlock the hdd.

most softmods are loaded throught font exploits (at least all new ones) so therefor a locked hdd is needed for a softmod to run, since it must go through all steps to archive it's load.

kernel>hardware checks>hdd check>loads xboxdash.xbe

the softmod will take place after the xboxdash.xbe is the one we exploited to load a hacked font, usually ernie.xtf that will patch code and load a habibi signed .xbe (now days nkpatcher) that will either load up a bios on the memory or patch the current kernel(bios) to allow us to run the goods.

a chipped xbox can run an unlocked hdd, since the flashed bios will be some hacked one, and will not need to run most of the M$ checks.
