Hi Everybody!
Ok first off I want to say what a great site. - very impressive for a local site (I am a novocastrian myself.)
Anyway Im looking to get my XBOX modded in Newcastle as soon as possible but cant solder myself.
I talked to a mate and he quoted $150 for a Duo2X mod chip and 200 gb hard drive installed with all software - dashboard, media centre, ftp, emulators etc.
(NB This is not including the price of the 200 gb hard drive, which Im goin to buy myself) The guy seemed to know what he was talking about and seemed like a good bloke.
However as a poor uni student I am always looking for the best price so I thought I'd check with u guys first. Is this an ok price?
Should I attempt a no solder chip install myself? I should be able to do all the software from a tutorial..
- I mostly want to use the XBOX for playing movies and music from the network and playing games.
- I probably wont want to use XBOX live.
I would appreciate any comments on price, setup, or tips on where I could get this done.
Thanks, Keep up the good work!
Mercury

Alright Mercury Maboy,
Nice you can join us. I dont know what anyone else thinks, but i think thats a little steep. If you bought the parts yourself it would definately be cheaper, obviously your paying for the blokes time to solder the chip to the board (not an easy task).
For example I bought a solderless Xenium Ice for my 1.0 box and that was under $60, and i bought a 160 HDD for $70 - so thats a total of $130ish, and all the rest (software & dashboards) I got of various places accross the net.
If you cant solder try a solderless kit - especially if you have the time to do it. I can throw my xbox around a bit and it still works fine and i have solderless.
I had never even touched an modchip or even dabbled with ftp until then, and i got no major problems.
Also, if you do it yourself, you will understand more about what your xbox is capable of, and the more cool things you can do with it. This site is a great resource and many people are willing ot help. keep posting questions here and people will answer (tho check first in the search to see if the question has been asked already). Read up - there are many manuals on the site and see if you can have a go.
Whichever your descision, good luck fella!

Just remember crazyfruit that he is talking Australian Dollars more then likely by the sounds of it.. So really its not too bad.. You have to remember the currency conversion lol.
If you wanted to do on the cheap Mercury_140 you could softmod. Softmod is really the same as putting in a modchip except rather then soldier you just install software to hack the xbox. You dont really need to buy much but it can be a hassle. You also dont need to soldier.. Just have a pc (not a laptop).. You could speak with DJB.. He will softmod your xbox for very cheap.. Probably $50 and upgrade your hdd when you want to as well. DJB is the writer of the Auto installer Deluxe and Softmod Installer Deluxe (http://www.aideluxe.com) and is from newcastle, nsw too..
anyway, hope that gets you started.. Any modchip will do really.. Since you dont want xbox live a softmod could be a good alternative.. Modchips are normally used so you can TURN OFF MODCHIP and get onto xbox live.

Thanx for that guys.. It helped a lot..
After taking ur advice I think I'll have a go at soft-modding my box.. Ive got plenty of time on my hands now Im off uni and I would prolly learn a bit doing it... and save some money..
I guess I kind of assumed a soft mod wouldnt be as good.. but I don't really need to turn it off so it seems like an appropriate option.
Im at a pc lan at d moment so I gotta go play some CS.. (It's an order apparently lol)
I'll get into the tutorials and post back soon when Im under way..
Thanx again,
Mercury

hi mecury,
Good to see another Newcastle Lad on the boards.. hehe
I will link you to some of the best tutorials.. Really its all you need.
Just remember with softmodding you will have to have a MEMORY CARD for your xbox so you can softmod..
ps.. shit before i forget.. If i havent already told you get ahold of Auto Installer Deluxe v2.11 from http://www.aideluxe.com.. DJB is also from newcastle and wrote the autoinstaller to be used for modchipped xboxes and softmodded xboxes.
Once you have your machine SOFTMODDED you can then use AID to install all the software you want like Dashboards, Emulators etc etc AID has over 60+ xbox apps.. _________________ HQ Network:
