Is it possible to replace the harddrive before doing any of the modifications? It would be nice to know that my original harddrive would remain safe and secure.
Any comments on this?
I've done all kinds of searches and can't find anyone else asking about this or giving a tutorial. Just trying to figure out how to softmod without actually changing the contents of the original drive.
XBOX 1.0 - not modded.

You would have to install a softmod however to get your eeprom information and other keys so you could LOCK the NEW HDD with the correct passwords etc but it does make it easier well i think!
If you have a xbox modded with a modchip you could easily do this..
DJB and I were only just talking about it the other day..
You coulud install a brand new hdd into a modchipped xbox and use Auto Installer Deluxe to format and partition it..
Then you would install the Softmod dashboard and the M$ Dashboard or whatever else you wanted to go onto this xbox..
Then you would use config magic with the backup eeprom, hddkeys etc etc that you got from your original xbox hdd and change the modchipped xbox eeprom to match yours..
Really im sure you can see where im going.. It can be done.. But its a lengthy process.
So to use SID...you actually have to mod the harddrive???
and once you LOCK the new drive...how can you unlock it?
I've read for about a week on different forums..and I'm just not picking up on some of the stuff...I understand what lock/unlock does, but not what it means as far as losing access to a harddrive if you wanted to take it away from the xbox.

????
SID stands for 'Softmod Auto Installer'.. If you want to mod your xbox in anyway including upgrading your hdd you will have to either install a modchip or softmod it..
Personally i suggest modchips as they are so much easier to recover from rather then if you make a mistake with a softmod..
Softmod is all software that tricks your xbox into loading a hacked bios which supports booting backups, dashboards, emulators etc.
A Modchip does the same thing but its all stored on the chip in the form of a bios.. You can turn it on and off very simple..
With Softmodding you always have to rollback to a backup of your hdd that SID creates.. It can be a drama if you are using XBOX LIVE too..
If you have a modchip fitted to your machine you can just boot the AIDeluxe and it will find the new hdd and format it straight away.. Its so much simpler then doing it the softmod method..

Using the same xbox tool you used to lock it.. You must LOCK YOUR HDD with the correct password for whatever xbox you are going to use it in. CONFIG MAGIC is the xbox application you can use to unlock your xbox hdd or flash your eeprom on the xbox to match another xbox.. CONFIG MAGIC is definately not for beginners though!

If you are running a SOFTMOD you should never UNLOCK YOUR HDD and reboot.. Otherwise you wont be able to boot again.
Anyway, gotta go but before i do ill link you to some UPGRADING a SOFTMOD HDD and installing softmod tutorials on HQ so if you decide to continue you have some resources....
I attempted to do the splinter cell soft mod, but just keep getting the black screen...no menu ever appears.
Guess the only other option if I want to do softmod is to do the IDE cable swap and copy it directly over.
