I was just trying (for shits and giggles) to replace the bios used by pbl on my xbox. It seems to me that putting an m8+ bios with c: evoxdash.xbe as the first dashboard exucutable and dropping the resulting file in place of the closed.bin in c:\sid should make it work.
Unfortunately, I could not get it to work, resorting to booting from the alternate (tray open) and restorting my backup. It would hang at the X symbol with no errors or activity. Am I missing something in my bios editing, some special trick needed for pbl or something like that?
I was using evtool 1.09 to do the bios editing, and was working from a virgin m8+ bios file.
I noticed that evtool 1.08 nor 1.09 could read the bios's included with the softmod.

SID 2.0 should be able to boot from C and E Drive, so there should be no use to editing that one. From memory I think 1.01 might've done the same thing but I can't remember.
The reason why it's not working for you is because you need a BFM (Boot from media) version of the BIOS, normal BIOSes you use to flash chips with won't work unless you convert them.

is there any main bonus for changing the bios in a softmod? any real reson too? I haven't changed mine and play all the emulators just fine, mainly only reason I did the mod. Just curious if it will be mandatory down the road if i use the xbox for other things. thanks

There's an old saying, if it works don't fix it.
So if your xbox works fine, leave it that way

I actually figured it out in the wee hours of the morning that I wasn't working from bfm sources (or a bfm capable evtool apparently).
Bonuses of working with a post moded bios? No more startup animation or trademark text, making for noticibly faster boots. Also, changed the bios igr from quick, as is default in the softmod installer, to compatibile, in hopes of getting a couple of problematic games working. It was incredibly easy once I figured out the bfm bit. As a note to anyone else planning on doing this, DO NOT replace both the opened and closed bioses at the same time or you'll have to use the splinter cell exploit to restore working bioses, in case they don't work. In fact, I only replaced the closed bios, leaving the open default. I don't play games from the opened bios (leading to unleashx), so why screw with it. If you do drop a bad bios in, you can just power on the xbox by using the eject button, and ftp a good bios back over the closed.bin.
Other things that can be done, changing the primary dashboard without renaming files, or even make xbmc your default dash. Replacing the X logo on boot with an image of your choice. Changing the fan speed permanently (mine runs a little warm at 20% with the 80gb 7200rpm wd in there, 30% smoothes it out). Disabling the dvdrom check, allowing you to boot with no dvdrom connected.

Nah I ended up running a modded version of the one inclded with the softmod installer deluxe 1.1 (m8 )
But now I have a nagging question. Has anyone seen a bfm x2 5028? I'd be interested in trying that out. Current XBTool versions can't load the 5028 so there's no chance in having it convert to bfm that way. Anybody know any other way to covert a bios to bfm?

I'll keep a look out for BFM versions of the new X2 and X3, but I don't like my chances that much, especially since XBtool won't support them.

sorry but this is bullshit , you can't change bootscreen logo and colors because a softmodded xbox loads the xbox original bios before loading the hacked bios .
if you say i'm wrong please post the bios to show it works.
you can change all this shit on a chipped xbox or a tsop flashed one .

it won't work on a cold boot, but on soft boots it will. If you have igr set to compatible you'll appreciate shortened boot times as it does a full soft reboot. Since my xbox is on for 12hours average a day doing various things I notice it a lot.

lol you don't need to change the softmod bios to have this , IGR doesn't do startup animation or anything so thats why it loads faster .
