Hi, I posted something about this in the VIP section, but maybe I'll get more of a response here.

Basically I've signed up for an online rental scheme, but when I put the discs in my xbox all that can be read is the VIDEO_TS folder. Turning of the chip means that sometimes they work and sometimes it tells me to put in the DVD dongle.

Basically I like to play my games from bed, so copying them to my HDD makes life a lot easier. Any ideas how to get these discs to be read? I've tried several dashboards, and none of them work, and it isn't picking it up through FTP either.

Any suggestions?

1) are you renting movies or games?

2) technically if you dont own the game/movie you shouldnt be making back up copies of it.

3) if you do own the game ignore the above comment.

1) It's a game

2) I'm aware I shouldnt be copying it, but whether you believe me or not it is due to laziness and the will to use trainers and i do delete em when im done. (I'm studying to be a computer games developer at uni so in a few years pirates will be stealing my money! Razz)

do the games work with the modchip off? are they original copies that your renting? if not i think you should switch to a legitiment rental business. how are you loading the disk? are you going into the file manager and accessing the DConfused you should be loading the game from an option on the dashboard or it should be autoloading when you stick the disk in.

Just so we know what I'm talking about I use Avalaunch
The discs are official legal copies
The discs boot with the chip off sometimes, but not other times
When I go to run the disc from avalaunch by selecting the disc symbol it just restarts the dash
When I go into filemanager or FTP all thats on the disc is VIDEO_TS, almost as if I'm using a PC drive to access it (I'm not by the way, just to avoid confusion Razz)

I've tried everything I can think of, but since the Xbox itself can't read the discs properly I can't get anything else to read them either, which is a pain.

maybe your dvd drive lens needs to be cleaned, replaced or you may need a new dvd drive. if you can borrow a friends dvd drive that may help you narrow down the problem(s).

if all your other games work fine then check the game dvds and make sure they arent dirty, scratched, or damaged.

I just checked them both and I'd have to say they're in better condition than most of my games!

You can have one of a few different things happen. Firstly, if these are backups, not original disks then they could have used media that is not compatible with your Xbox DVD Drive.

Chances are, they may use different disks as they get better deals here and there.

Or, it could just be a bad burn. Original Xbox games are pressed, not burned. So, if you have a Dual Layer game that is pressed your Xbox will read it no problem. But, if you have a dual layer burn chances are your disk will not be read. I have a Samsung drive and so far have not read one burned DL disk. Doubtful they are using DVD9 media, but it's possible.

I would lean toward the type of media not being compatible. That's why some work and some do not. I highly doubt they use the exact same brand of disk for every single backup they make.

Sorry, I think we've had a misunderstanding...

The games are genuine xbox games... complete with the nifty little hologram in the middle

Okay, the word copies that I read there through me off. I didn't know there was a video TS Folder in a Xbox game. I'm more confused now than before..lol.

So, basically, your Xbox is thinking that you are putting a DVD Movie in and not a game, else why would it require the dongle kit.

What mod chip do you have?
What bios are you using?
What application and version of application are you using to rip these to your HD?

Im using the Xecuter3 with the LCD screen. I've got the X3 Config Live 1959 Bios, but the EvoX M8+ bios has the same problem.

Im using Avalaunch (not sure what version cuz it updated itself) And I use the backup within Avalaunch itself or use Qwix 1.01 to rip the isos.

The DVD movie it tries to play is the one that says "This is an Xbox Disc, put it into your Xbox to play"

Not sure if it helps but I just checked and it's a Samsung DVD Rom SDG-60B with the firmware x010
