I have a sony DRU500a , which is a 2x drive, but I installed & verified that the firmware was updated, supposedly making it a 4x.
When I read a disc though, I am around 1500 kb/sec....isnt that 1x? _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic

yeah , that is about 1x recording speed ,
you might need to change the media to 4x certified ,
also you should find the info about the firmware you are using
and see which media is supported @ 4x that will make it a lot easier

That was the read speed! Not burning.
I bought sonys 4x media....they are RW discs, should that matter?
Bob, I see you have the modded Samsung drive in your box. I do as well, but when I purchased it I was told it would read ANY media + or -, but it will only accept CompUSAs generic DVD-R, some dvd- dont work. i moded my drive myself and it pretty much reads everything except some +r discs , _________________ Xbox v1.0/1.1/1.5/1.6a

you modded it to read more media?? How do you do that?
If we have the same drive, what would make mine not read all dvd+ & most dvd- ? Can I update the firmware by powing the box up with an IDE cable connected to my PC? _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic

i flashed my dive with the xbox samsung firmware that i got from xbins
you prabably have the same firmware since your drive can read oyginal games ,
i dont know why its having problems reading different media ,
so far i only had problems with dvd+r discs ,
it reads dvd-rs cd-r and cd-rw also reads dual layer dvds but with -rom booktypes _________________ Xbox v1.0/1.1/1.5/1.6a
