Shark2th is correct.
Here is why you need a lockable drive.
MS configured the bios to look to the HD to see if it's security features are enabled..ie: locked HD. This way, the average Joe cannot just take the drive out of the Xbox, stick in his PC and grab MS's files.
The HD is locked via the motherboard's eeprom. Not every HD has built in security features.
Since you need to launch the original MS bios in order to login to Xbox Live you would have to have a locked HD otherwise when the bios looked to the HD to check it, you would get an error code 05 and a frag instead of launching the dashboard.
Hopefully that clears things up for you a little bit. It sounds a little more confusing than what it actually is. But, once you understand how the original MS Bios works then you have a better understanding how a lot of the error numbers occur.
