I am wondering what you think is the best app to put on my box that allows me to put a game or movie in the tray and write it directly over to the HD. _________________ XBOX v1.1:

As far as putting DVD's to your HD it's not a real refined process. Basically, DVD2Xbox will rip it to the Xbox HD but it does so in individual .vob files. You can use the XBMC stack feature to stack them together and watch, but like I said it's not a real refined process.
Hopefully, an application will come out that will allow you to rip and then convert the DVD into one watchable file. In the interim, what I do is this. I use a program called Super DVD to AVI ripper 4.0
I convert DVD's to DivX/Avi files. Most DVD's are around 7GB in size too, so that is another factor. If you have a 120GB HD that will only store abou 15 or so movies, and that is if you dont have games on there. I can take that same 7GB movie and convert it to a 500-600 MB DivX movie and keep respectable quality.
You lose your 5.1 sound, but if you want great sound then just pop the DVD in and watch it that way.
Hope you find a method that suits you.

are there dvdrws that the xbox drive doesnt read? I got a cheap one just to transfer games from my pc to xbox, but it doesnt' read the disc. It just keeps saying "no disc". Do I need a high quality dvd or is it the burning process I am using, or perhaps the extraction? It's driving me crazy

It's probably the brand of media you are using. But, it could be one, the other or both.
