if you are connecting via a router, you can use Cat5 or Cat6 basic networking cables.

If you are connecting right from your Xbox to the PC then you need whats called a cross over cable. They look identical but the ends are wired differently inside the plugs.

are you getting a connection to the xbox at all?....try to ping the xbox address to verify connectivity. Make sure any firewalls are turned off or are properly configured. When FTP'ing some firewalls, like zone alarm, see the data connection attempt back to your pc from the xbox as an intrusion attempt. If everything looks kosher network wise...try the disable then enable on the network connection properties for the network card.
