Hey everyone,

I softmodded my X-Box some time ago and am using UnleashX as my primary dash, running a recent build of XBMC as an application. The MS dash stopped working quite some time ago from either location, with UnleashX reporting that C:\msxboxdash.xbe cannot be found.

I've logged into it via FTP while booted into both UnleashX and XBMC to try to access the C drive, and I noticed something peculiar:

- When FTP'ed in under UnleashX, drives C and D aren't even visible. Only E, F, X, Y, and Z.
- When FTP'ed in under XBMC, drives C and D become visible, however, they are empty. Any attempts to upload data or create a new directory result in a 450 error. Aside from C and D, I also see drives E, F, and Q.

At this point, I have *no* clue what's going on. The data in partition E is where UnleashX, XBMC, and other apps are loaded (basically the primary partition), but partitions F, X, Y, Z, and Q show different data that is quite obviously user-created (including some music) but the source of which remains unknown. Drive Q in particular actually appears to be the XBMC installation root.

Can anyone offer me any guidance so I can get back to the main dash and change the danged supported resolutions?! I'm getting a bit tired of running this thing with a composite signal.

I sincerely appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you have a virtual C drive.

if that is the case, just reinstall the softmod with out a virtual c drive!

Wow, now I really feel like a jackass...

So here's what happened (yeah, in hindsight it wasn't too bright):

1) Unmounted the virtual C drive (at which point I could see the C and D partitions).
2) Formatted ("Large HDD", 120 gig) the disk, thereby losing my backups of everything (all but the D drive was wiped).
3) Installed MS Dash 5950 to the C drive from the softmod menu of AID.
4) Installed XBMC shortly thereafter to the C drive as well.

Well, good news is upon reboot I was finally able to access the MS dash again and fix the goddamn resolution issue that's been confining me to composite video for over a year now. Bad news is I can no longer boot off the AID disc.

At this point, I know I've done something horribly wrong. I lent my original MechAssault disc out a few years ago and never saw it again, so I can't re-launch SID easily as far as I can tell (although the savegame is still there). To make matters worse, in the 5 times I've moved since I softmodded this thing I lost my original hard drive (which was softmodded before I did a disk upgrade).

Moving forward, what the hell can I do to fix this?! A brief overview of the procedure would be awesome so I can start to figure it out from there. If I can hook the drive up to a Linux system and unlock it in order to do some kind of manual fix, that'd be awesome, but I get the feeling that's not going to be the case (especially considering I lost *all* backup data, and I assume the EEPROM is needed to unlock it).

Warm regards,
The dumb fellow in the corner hanging his head in shame

Only thing you can do now is chip it or build an eeprom reader.

Let's say I can get my hands on an original MechAssault disc (turns out a Gamestop about half an hour away from me has one - what are the odds?)... Since I have the savegame still on the XBox's hard disk, can I re-mod it?

Sweeet, it was well worth the drive - got an MS02301LL MechAssault disc and 2 memory cards for a grand total of less than $7.

So a follow-up question before I proceed - are there any guides or wikis regarding how a softmod actually works? I'd really like to know step-by-step how this shit works so I can avoid bricking it in the future. Every guide I've found is literally just a howto - no true nitty-gritty explanations are given. Namely information like how the bootloader works, where default dashes are defined, what should and should not be installed on the C drive, etc.

Anyone have any tips or knowledge they care to share?

Nothing should ever be installed to the C drive, the mod dash should always be on E and all the softmod is for is to tell the XBOX to boot the E drive and not C.

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I was able to successfully re-mod my XBox (thank God) and it's booting directly into XBMC like I wanted. However, I've got a new question... How in the hell can I get to the MS dash? Clicking R3 (analog stick) used to show a "Dashboard" option long ago, but does not at this point. Eventually my TV will change, and I'll need to be able to change the supported resolutions. I did a standard single-boot XBMC install with no virtual C drive.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can go in to the C drive and launch the MS dash from there but with XBMC i did not need to change anything but the XBMC settings to change the video input type.

I just tried launching the xboxdash.xbe file in the root of the C partition but the thing just hung, unfortunately. With regard to video settings, that is true, however, it will only offer you the resolutions that are enabled (or set as supported rather) within the primary XBox dash video settings. My current TV is a POS while I finish collecting the components I need to set up a projector, and as a result can only do 480i (however, component still looks worlds better than composite).

Since the TV will crap out at anything over 480i, I want to leave those resolutions disabled until I've got a display that supports them (as I have friends who like to mess with stuff, much like myself).

Do you think I need to run AID again and install the MS dash in a specific way? This past installation I literally just chose the single boot w/ XBMC option, so I'm not sure if that'd have any impact on it.

You cant run anything over 480 with the type of input you have, if you get the XBOX HD kit and hook it up then the other options will open up. Wink

You could do the duel boot with MS dash if you really need the MS dash but again the mod dash over rides the MS dash and the MS dash is just there to keep the softmod working.

I gotcha, cool deal - I'll give that a shot.

BTW, I'm already using an HD cable, which is why I needed to disable the unsupported resolutions (as the TV's by no means HD - it just supports 480i over component). I'm already set in that arena Smile . There was some multi-purpose high def cable I bought that works with XBox, the 360, and the PS2 (one at a time) with both component and composite outputs. It's pretty damn slick honestly, haven't seen it for sale in a while though. Just flick a switch to change between component and composite.

At this point, it's all working, so I may wait until I get my projector to access the MS dash again. I honestly can't wait now that I've discovered the MediaStream skin (absolutely gorgeous).
