it seems to me like the smart money is on setting static ip's so that if i fix this issue, it doesnt happen again. is that the common practise with networking xbox's?

I use Auto dhcp but I mess with networkin my home pcs so Ive messed with enough to understand a little at my house. I also can mess with settings in my router so that I narrowed down my own issues.

Make sure when setting up your network on Xbox make sure you use the router IP not a pc unless thats the only pc on the network.

To help with all networking issues, myself and DJB created this worksheet and guide for setting up, installing, configuring and troubleshooting network issues.

ok, rather then address the issue i have decided to bypass the issue. i have since purchased a crossover cable and a second network card for my pc.
yeaahhhhh booyyyzzzz!
that being said, i havent connected it up yet so dont hold your breath!
what is the process with networking xbox's and pc's with cross over cables? (this is probably just general discussion now - i can google it later if i have too many dramas).
is it simply a case of connecting the xbox to my pc and then the smb network should be sweet?

Ok since im on ebay right now waiting for 930 to come i will leave a quick message...to network with a crossover cable you just pop the crossover cable into your computer directly and i believe you set ur xbox to static ip with the same ip address as your computer...then u should be good...you might also be able to use dchp but im not 100% sure _________________

i have gone through a couple of tutorials of connecting an xbox to pc via a crossover but still no good. i have tried dhcp, static ip and no ip. my setup now is xbox connected directly to my pc via crossover.
where should i be looking for my networked folders? i have tried all the options: smb, add a network place, upnp... im losing ma mind

1st make sure you are sharing folders on your PC. You can right click a folder/drive and check to share. I dont use a crossover cable but Im sure if you keep having problems its in the IP for the network. In the NETWORK ip it should be the ip of your pc. I will let some others help more on crossover since Ive never used it.
