I am currently in the process of upgrading to a Maxtor 300GB drive. First I have read a dozen or so tutorials on this subject. But none seem to discuss what I should see after I hit Format HDD Large. For the past hour now all I see is the dim screen and a AID v4.30 logo in lower left corner. Is there no progress indicator?

How long should I wait?

Here are the detailed info should you need it. I am using a compatible new HD ATA/EIDE 16MB cache 7200 RPM. The Xbox is softmoded NOT chipped. I have the full bootable ISO of AID 4.30 in the drive running.

While this is my first time upgrading an Xbox I am no stranger to DOS, Linux, Unix, and Windows. I will keep checking back, thanks for your assistance.

Welcome to the XBOX-HQ, we hope you enjoy this and all the other HQ sites we have to offer. Very Happy

I'm not really sure what it is your doing here, are you adding the 300 or are you wanting to update whats on the 300?

Did you use chimp or xboxhdm to add the 300?

Well I am currently attempting this for the 3rd time today now. Confused I started back at square one and I am following this tutorial here (somewhat by the book).

I have a copy of xboxhdm_v1.9 on my network drive. I have 2 windows PC's hooked up into the LAN and one Linux laptop on a router. So as you can tell I have no lack of equipment. I ended up finding out the first iso disk I burnt was faulty, the second lacked files I needed... But now it looks like I took a step backwards somehow. I just tried the hdd formatting with xboxhdm and when I popped the finished hdd into the xbox the screen has an errror message 05 and green writing telling me the Xbox is in need of service. Rolling Eyes

I have or had a brand new 300GB hdd as described and I was attempting to access the full limit as the tutorial say about the 137GB limits, I assumed this was the hdd large format feature? But now because I restarted I suppose I messed the hdd up and must reformat once again?

I have the original hdd softmodded with SID with UnleashX and I have no problem using the FTP to get all the files including the EEPROM bin. Which is also backed up on the network drive.

NOTE: Also I want to point out that step 4 on the tutorial is not noob proof. Anyone following in this tutorial or others should be told that when the PC prompts you [yes/no]? You MUST type the full word yes and hit enter. I am a technical writer of computer manuals and I haven't seen near perfect tutorial on this subject. So to authors of tutorials, please don't forget the most minor of details when planing your tutorials.

Thanks

Error 5 is HDD not locked, so somehow you messed up on the locking part of the tut. Reread the tut in the section and see if you did anything differently.

Go back in HDM and re do the build and lock it and once you have that all you need to do is boot the AID disk and run xbox partitioner and add the lost HDD space to your F or F and G drive.

No need to tamper with the C and E drive here. Wink

Ok today here is the problem and I am sorry, but I realize this is not an AID problem but a hdd locking problem now. The system reports I cannot lock the hdd because the "security is frozen". According to all that I read so far the pc bios is supposed to be able to disable the security but this option is not available from mine. I tried the unplug the data cable mentioned in the tutorial sent with xboxhdm but then the system refused to acknowledge the drive. So currently I am stuck with an unlocked drive in a frozen state. As far as I can tell everything is on it and it just needs to be locked.

Are there any utilities I am over looking to make the security not an issue?

I am also checking with Maxtor to ask them how I should lock or unlock my drive since they made the damn thing. I have done some complicated things but this is really getting on my top ten list. I have all weekend and my son is snoozing so I plan to be back around. Once I get this thing figured out I should write out a 50 page technical manual on it. Wink

Update: I have been looking around at this issue. I ran atapwd and found the drive is unlocked but security is frozen. The DOS locking utility didn't work either. I tried messing with the cmos to the point I almost lost the worksation Sad I have twisted a tweak so many varibles I am just tired and running thin on options. I did get atapwd to see the drive as a slave and not frozen but couldn't lock it. I am going to eat something and watch some Dr. Who. Maybe that will get the brain juices flowing.

Update: After a rest, I did some more searching and decided to try the Chimp program option with the hot swap of the HDD and the DVD. However when I run chimp I get a green screen so I assume this is not an option for me?

You get the green screen since you have a ver. 1.6 and you will need to use telnet to see the options in chimp, here is the guide if you want to try it again: http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-255.html

Thanks wes213, I did go that route last night. I found the telnet connection and setup not as clear as it should have been.

SETUP - crossover cable from PC to XB
Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections
Right click on Local Area Connection
Properties
Scroll down to TCP/IP Click Properties Button
Choose use following IP 192.168.0.5

Set the XB up just as he said and the Chimp Menu will appear.
WARNING!: I lost power mid transfer and it locked the drive I ended up paying $25 to have it unlocked!

As of now the 300GB drive is back to itself but this XBox modding is a very touchy system held together with rubberbands and paperclips. It is not something for the faint of heart or thin wallet. Wink

I might try this chimp route once more but fates are conspiring against me. I think I will attempt it after I study it more. I have a few "junk" drives laying around to play with and then I will return and let you and the rest of the community know what I have learned.

I want to express my gratitude toward the friendly people here on XBOX-HQ and just to sum up that I finished my son's XBox mod successfully. Very Happy

As you have read, this topic began with a question about AID but the real culprit turned out to be the HDD. I can't blame the tools for it was a power disruption that locked the HDD in mid transition. I tried the master passwords and none seemed to work. I downloaded the HDD Unlocker software and paid $25 to have it unlocked. It takes about 2 hours and worked well. Overall this project cost less than replacing my son's library of games.

Chimpanzee Linux is much better to use to clone a drive than XboxHD but that is just my opinion. I posted a lengthy tutorial on this subject and I hope this will balance my karma... probably not. Wink I believe Microsoft should make a retail disk that would unlock and softmod the XBox since they have abandoned the system and refuse to sell new hardware and software. They could at least make a profit from selling softmods. I know it will never happen because they plan to come out in the year 2020 with the XBox Classic model. Rolling Eyes As I saw here:

LOL Cool
