So I've tried using XBMC, and EvoX -- and client side using Total Commander and Flash FXP, no combination of the above has given me steady results -- I'll leave it running, and when I come back later there's always connection failures or at best file transfer fails on individual files.

I have a soft modded xbox (didn't pay attention, it was a while ago, so I can't tell you what version or model I'm using or which flashed rom image, etc) and I'm using an 80 gb hdd that I just installed over the last week (it was a bitch finding a PC that I could lock the drive with -- I used the linux script where you type "yes" like 400 times -- xboxhd? something like that).

My other woe is that FTP is incredibly slow! What I'd like to do, is pop the drive back into my pc -- unlock it -- and copy the files via the same PC -- however my linux foo is horrible. (though I'm great with DOS). Linux seems to be the only OS that has any kind of decent FATX support though, am I wrong?

I would like to either find a fairly dummy proof bootable linux distro with a graphical file manager that can mount a FATX drive, and NTFS/FAT32 drives easily -- so that I can do all the copying locally and not bother wiht my FTP woes (FTP works great for small/short stuff -- but for 50-60 gb of content, it's a bitch.)

Any ideas, help, suggestions, comments?

Also, where can I find out news about newly released xbox software from the indy scene?

Hello, Try using UnleashX & Total commander, I use these 2 and have no problems. Also make sure the file names of the data being sent arnt too long, or contain any illegal characters as this causes transfer failures.

You could try a program called Fat X Plorer for transfering large files through Win 2000/xp

As for a decent Linux distro, Try `Linux Mint`, its a nice looking, simple to use distro based on Ubuntu.

What are the file naming limits on fat-x? Max length, illegal chars, etc.

Off the top of my head im unsure, possibly 42 characters.
The illegal Characters im also unsure about, stuff like !"£$%^&*()?/\ shouldnt be in file names.

Basically, just keep it short & sweet

I try to stay at 18 chars or less, as long as you stick to #,s and text you should be fine.
