I've tried to install XMBC as my dash on a stock Xbox with AID 4.10+4.13 several times now. At this point I am doing a series of things that appear to be right but results in an error 21.
1) Boot up the Xbox with the AID DVD
2) Format all drives, such that C, E, F, X, Y, Z are all blank
3) Install MS Dash 5960
4) Create MS backup from AID
5) Create EEPROM backup
6) Softmod One-Click Install -> Single Boot w/ Virtual C (the recommended option) -> Setup with XBMC Dash
Installing takes a while, but after copying files for a while the system says I need to shut it down, remove the DVD, and boot it without the DVD in order to complete the installation. This inevitably results in an Error 21 with a red ring. Shutting the Xbox down again and booting with the AID DVD still works, but the installation does not complete as indicated. What am I doing wrong?

No, I'm not. I wasn't aware I needed to. I am selecting XMBC for my dash, not as an app, and I'm not selecting Avalaunch anywhere.

Oh ok no avalaunch, make sure your useing the xbmc in the softmod dash section (if your useing a softmod) and if it still wont go you can use any other dash and then add xbmc as an app.
Then you can install x-select (found in the advanced options of aid) to set it to boot xbmc as your default dash.

Will X-select prevent a dash update in a game from corrupting my dash? And do you know what is causing the problem that prevents me from installing XBMC the way I want it to?

Once X-select is installed, how am I supposed to access it? Rebooting the system also results in an Error 21. I installed it on E because I didn't know what it would do if I installed it on C. I do not want to have to crack open the Xbox to recover from any of these failures.

I tried installing with another option (install with Gamesave on open tray), just to see if I would have any better luck that way. I tried to unmount the virtual C drive, since I could never be sure if a virtual drive was mounted there or not, and when it came back, I had booted into UnleashX! I tried continuing on, and the installer failed, but not before deleting my C drive entirely. I could not reinstall the MS dash, nothing worked any longer when I tried to do anything. Now I'm getting Error 13 and I don't know how to recover from it short of cracking open my case, which I really did not want to do.
The virtual C drive that AID offers looked like a really good way to be able to play legit games that wouldn't bork my system, but I've went and borked two good Xboxes now trying to install it (the first one I took back to Gamestop and told them it was bad when I got it, I can't do that with the second one.) As far as I can tell, the virtual drive is really messed up.
All I want is XBMC on my dash and the ability to safely play legit games. Why is this so hard to achieve?

Or chip it.

It was giving me error 13 when I posted last, but I was so upset with the situation that I put the project down for a few days. Now I have an error 16, which is apparently going to make my problem even more difficult or permanent! I never realized that this would happen on top of what's happened so far! I am just amazed at how ridiculous the situation has become.

Some posts I've found through Google say that the way to fix error 16 is to remove the IDE and power from the CD-ROM, and you're supposed to end up with an error 11, which is good enough to perform hot swapping with, but I'm getting error 12 instead when I try this.

I managed to unlock the HDD via hotswapping, and I restored it to its stock state. Now I need to figure out a way to install XBMC such that it will be protected from games attempting to update the dash. The AID could not do this for me - is there some other way?

Thare may be a setting in XBMC for that but as long as you dont launch live in the games menu it shouldent be a prob.
