I bought a copy of Enclave for the xbox and I love it. I read up on how to back them up and all seems fine, until I tried testing the backed up version. It went to the "loading..." screen that comes up with you start the game, then gives an error and won't work. Is there some way of making my backups work so that if something happens to my originals, I can still play my games?

First, what program are you copying the game with? Like DVD2XBOX and some other apps, may fail a burn, in which case you can go ahead, clean off your video game, and try again.

Some games require a patch to be played of the HDD. Not sure if that game needs it though.

I use unleashX to copy mine over and it works fine...so i think it may just have been a bad copy.

What I'm doing is putting the game into the XBox, using Filezilla to bring it over to my PC, then I used Qwix to patch the xbe (whatever that means) and created an .iso with qwix

you dont need to ftp the files first. You can use Qwix to do the job al in one directly from the xbox DVD drive. Presumably your trying to backup to DVD then play the game from the backup disc. If so burn the disc as slowly as possible using a decent brand DVD-R. post back if your still stuck
