Originally posted to VIP Support (ticket 2038) on Apr 15, 2007...received no answer so I'm trying here:
couple of years ago, stationed in Japan and I bought a Japanese xbox (mfr date 203-06-29) when a friend told me he could do a softmod (evox) and allow me to play both my american and japanese games. purchased a 200 gb hd to upgrade and he did all the work. Everything was good until two days ago when I was trying to repair/upgrade the gentoox linux that was not properly booting. I was negligent and allowed the boot disk to update my bios. Xbox now boots directly into linux (which now works), but I would like to get my evox (and game play ability) back. How do I accomplish this?
P.S. Never done this before, so I researched and could not find bios or good newbie instructions.

The xbox used to, on power up, flash the normal xbox screen. Then a word would appear at the bottom, xecutor I believe. (Funny how you don't clearly remember the things that happen all the time.) Then a dashboard would come up displaying partition sizes, time, IP address and gave options of booting an xbox game, booting to linux, system settings, emulators, etc. I believe that was evox as I could change the background skins. Now I just get a blue background with "Gentoox loader" at the top.
So what are my options:
1. Is there a tool available to flash the bios back to the old one to access the harddrive? This is what I would like to do somehow. All the forum topics and tutorials I could find assume you are starting from scratch (which I'm not) or have mod chip installed (which I don't). There is also quite a bit of verbiage I don't understand.
2. Is this xbox only linux now?
3. Do I have to buy another xbox and move my hardrive into the new one? If so, will I have to do something to the new xbox to make it work?
And another question. How do you know which version of xbox you have?

Ok first sorry for no reply in the VIP support but your Xbox is not softmodded because if it booted and said xecuter then I had to have either been chipped of tsoped. So I need to know which one to help you as for the bios it isnt a bios problem when you put a game in then turn it off then back on and let it boot.

I know that the xbox was not chipped, therefore it must be TSOP'd (sp?). I'll try restarting with a game in the drive. Does it have to be any particular game?

First, let me saw Burner6999 rocks. Great response, quick troubleshooting, and, most importantly, he showed me how to fix my problem.
For some of you this my seem an easy fix, but I'd never done it, so it was a miracle to me. Providing a couple of screen shots of the Gentoox bios that had been flashed to my ROM we found a Net Flash tool. When run, it provided an IP address of the xbox for a pc to log into. Using my PC's browser I found a flash bios screen and, using a bios Burner provided, flashed the xbox. Next thing I know my evolution x screen is back just the way I left it a few months ago. I was thrilled and Burner instructed me the my evox was old and to update to unleash or XBMC. But that is a story for another thread....
