Is there any possible way to install a new, larger hard drive in the xbox WITHOUT having to have a modchip? Any links to tutorials or any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated as this is probably the last step I need to take to be satisfied with my softmod.

yes ,there is a way to do this ,
you going to have to flash your oryginal xbox bios with hacked bios ,
the easiest way to do this is using game exploits like mechasslt , 007. or splinter cell ,
there are many tutorials on it at xbox-scene.com
look for "flashing tsop"
read as many of them as u can and make sure you understand before you do anything .,
this will not work if u have a version 1.6 xbox

Could you point me in the direction of a tutorial to switching in a larger hard drive once the bios is flashed?

ok ,
all you have to worry about is flashing your tsop ,
that is the most difficult thing to do ,
after your tsop is flashed all you have to do is set your new harddrive jumper to cable select , plug it in , and run a autoinstaller ,
like i said look at xbox-scene.com they have many tuts about flashing tsop
