For one its not gonna read CD-R discs, it will read CD-RW discs sometimes and try DVD-R discs, they are more likely to work than DVD+R discs.

Or you can tweak your drive which I dont recommend, If I were you just get a samsung, or phillips.

Check out this link:

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/thompson_potentiometer.htm

this is a very very complete and great tutorial by our friend the llamma over at llamma.com . The guy has great tuts that aren't here yet, and he's innovating with modding damn near every time something new comes out.

But like the tutorial says, this is NOT for a novice user. But also, like you said, if your drive is FUBAR anyway, it's worth a shot. Just follow the tut letter for letter.

Almost all computer lasers and CDROMs are adjustable. But what you're doing is pretty much increasing the voltage. And what happens when you give a vid card too much voltage? It pops, right? So be careful. Only in microscopic intervals to make sure it works right. Once you get a disc to read every time, leave it. Don't try and get too much of a good thing.
