How did I know it would be something like that?
I get most of what your saying there but I may need my hand holding for some of that.
I'll probably have a go at that tomorrow as I've got to go to a family wedding today, dull! Don't these people know that there are XBox's out there waiting for our attention?!
Anyway guys, catch up with ya a bit later

Well that went well........ NOT !
I read the manual, made my ISO burnt it to DVD and then popped it in the XBox. Auto Installer revealed itself, lovely. Used the BIOS checker, fine. Then installed what I thought was the latest version of the dashboard I had, XBMC? the one with the nice stock photos in the background and a predominanetly grey interface. However, I've ended up with the green thing that I can't do anything with ! What dashboard have I loaded then?
This set up is no longer recognising the DVD I made so I made another and it doesn't see that either. My PC can't read either of these now and I'm pretty sure I've made them the same as per the manual.
The dashboard (XBox interface)I'm looking at only has 4 "buttons" Memory, Music, XBox Live & Settings
The settings section doesn't have as much as the previous 'dashboard' I was running so therefore I can change very little. I have no files to look at so I can't attempt to establish what is happening when the XBox starts up. And to make matters worse I now don't have any network connection from my PC to the XBox, despite having checked and corrected the network settings on the XBox
Can someone please, please please tell me what dark forces are at work here. I just don't get it ?????????? And getting a bit p...ed off now!

okkkk.
Do yous till have the sofmod files and the Game you softmodded with? If so, boot to the softmod screen with the game, and reinstall the dashboard.
Once you get done, on AID, you have to go to the bottom of the dashboard section and choose one labeled "XBMC (Soft) or XBMC (Soft DHCP)" either one will work fine! _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

Hypnotix,
I take it by softmod you mean the files I used from the AIDeluxe Auto Installer DVD that I made from the download? Don't understand the 'game' reference.
I still have the DVD but the XBox is not seeing it. If I have the DVD loaded in the tray when I start the box, like I might boot a PC from a backup disk, the dashboard still tells me the DVD in the tray is not recognised. I can't get anywhere other than this very limited interface. Is there something I should be doing on start up?

Oh dear oh dear,
I think I've got a few things wrong here.
I thought my box was hard modded but in speaking again to the person I bought it from, it's not. It's a soft mod.
The dashboard update I installed from AID was for the hard mod. I therefore think I may have overwritten/destroyed my softmod and ended up back at the original M$ dashboard.
Can someone confirm for me that this is what I have done? And tell me how the hell I get back to where I was?
Sorry if I've given you guys the run around.

Thats what i was talking about lol, i figured you were softmodded form what all you were saying.
You need the game saves for softmodding and a game to load the game save exploits. There are three games you can use, 007 Agent Under Fire, the 1st Splinter Cell and Mech Assault, all of these need to be the originals, non platinum edition.
Then you just transfer the save exploit to the xbox and load it like a game save for which ever game you choose to use. After you get here you can do everything again.
If you cant get a hold of ANY of these items, i will fix it for you for free, all you would have to pay is the shipping. I'm very trusted, ask anyone around here, and i would send it back to you the next day. I will also insall anytrhing else you want, dashboard updates, emulators, apps, etc.

Cheers for that Buddy, oh bugger! Still it's one way to learn I suppose.
Thanks for the offer of the direct assistance. I think what I'll do for the time being is have a go at doing the softmod myself. That way I'll learn even more!
I think I should be able to get hold of one of games without too much trouble so let's see how I get on.
I'll keep you posted and give you a shout if I come unstuck.

Depends on your TV resoloution, ie NTSC16x9 (720x480) all the way up to 1080i (1920x1080). At least that's how it was when I was tinkering with skinning XBMC 2.0. Perhaps I'm behind the times.

Are you talking about the pics you use as skins?
If so, standard 640 x 480 will work without any probs. I have a feeling the pic is resized to fit the screen anyway.
Well having realised that I'd blown my softmod I went away and read up on how to re do it. Figuring I needed Splinter Cell, or similar, plus an Action Replay disc, memory card etc I set about finding them on EBay. Got the game ok for £4 (although I found it later in a second hand shop for £2!) and have been trying to get hold of the memory card and disc. Missed one yesterday so had a snipe set up for one finishing tomorrow.
In the meantime I thought I'd better bung the game in the XBox to make sure it was working ok. Well, low and behold I found the game launched the exploits I needed. And thanks to a great posting by Michael Brim http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-183.html It wasnt' long before I had my softmod back.
A couple of bits and pieces are not as they should be; I get a "your XBox needs servicing" message when i try to go to what is listed on the Evolution X dashboard as "go to MS Dashboard" But I'm not too worried about that. My next plan is to load the bits I need from the AIDeluxe DVD I've made. Which is kind of where I left off. Hopefully now I'll get the latest dashboards loaded and a few skins, and then it's off to try and set up my SMB sharing so as I can stream from my PC to the box as a true media centre.
