i go to the download sections and download a dashboard. Then i see it on my desktop. How do i load it to my Xbox. Do i need i modship to do this?????

You need to get a little informed about modded machines.
First, ther are a few ways to do it. One way is with a mod chip. This is my personal favorite method, but like previously mentioned not your only choice.
Installing a modchip involves a few things. First of which is deciding what chip you want. Mod chips for the most part are all pretty much equal. They will all let you flash them with a bios that enables you to make your Xbox do wonderous things.
Where they differ is extra bells and whistles such as, built in webservers, different flashing methods, more storage, and so on.
My top three chips in order of preference:
SmartXX, Xenium Ice, X3. These are all fourth generation chips, meaning they have their own operating system.
Once you have your chip installed and flashed, then you have to make some modifications to your HD. If you keep the original HD in you only need to begin to add files to it. If you put a larger HD in you must partition, prepare, and then install applications/dashboard.
Your dashboard resides on the HD. Your bios resides on your chip. This confuses some people, so I figured I'd throw that out there.
The easiest way to get your apps and dash going is by using an autoinstaller disk. This disk will allow you to do all you need, its a complete solution.
Another way to mod you xbox is called a TSOP flash. This is basically flashing the bios to the area on the motherboard that contains the orginal MS Bios. The bios (basic input output system) is what sets the rules for your machine. It's like a mini OS. It tells your xbox what it can and cant do. By replacing the MS bios with a different bios, your xbox will be able to do cool stuff
I have never TSOP flashed a machine, but others here can give you more info.
Next is softmodding. This is using various gamesaves/software info to hack the Xbox and trick it into letting you do cool stuff. Again, I personally never went this route, but it's quite popular. Feel free to ask more info in our softmodding forum.
