First things first: I would like to thank XBOX HQ, its knowledgeable mods and friendly members for providing the best resource for fledgling modders out there, bar none. I have wanted to mod my XBOX for use as an XBOX Media Center since its inception, but my research at places like xbox-scene would always leave me frustrated and intimidated. This site and particularly VIP downloads are a god-send and the antithesis of the elite mindset of the other modding sites out there. I have spent hours and hours researching this site and with the great help of the forums, tutorials and VIP downloads, I have been able to easily and successfully soft mod my XBOX and finally add XBMC to my console. I can’t thank you folks enough.

Now on to my problem: I want to be able to use XBMC to stream media off of my PC. I also need to set up FTP since I still need to upgrade the stock HD to a new 250 gig Maxtor, and I understand that you need to have FTP set up in order to change the HD with a soft mod. And I know there are a ton of other reasons you need FTP.

Problem is, while I feel like I know my way around a PC pretty good, I really have nearly zero experience with FTP and network settings. I have scoured the forums and tutorials but most topics start out a little over my head as far as IP addresses, etc.

I’m loath to beg for a walkthrough, but is there anybody out there kind enough to walk me through setting up the network/FTP setup. I promise to return the favor back to the community once I get up to speed by being active and helping whenever I can.

Here are the vitals: I have an XBOX softmodded through the Splinter Cell exploit using evo x. I currently have XBMC set up as my dash. I will be connecting to a Windows XP PC using an rj45 network cable and 3 com router.

Also, once I have FTP/networking set up, how do I set up my XBOX to stream media via XBMC?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Josh

Dude you rock! Thanks for the input since most of the time we solve issues then the poster is gone and we don't get to hear the success stories. The admins tend to joke around with each other a lot and it helps to break the monotony that so many other sites fall in to. Your feedback is appreciated.
As for the softmod, I respectfully bow out of this since softmodding is not my strong suit. That being said there are others here such as pirrup, Dangermouse, that know softmods inside out. I suspect that they will get you to where you need to be.
As far as networking goes with XBMC, I set mine under DHCP and let the router do all the work. I can run between the pc and xbox as well as things like Xlink Kai very easily. You might try that before you start the static ip stuff. Look under network in XBMC and you should see the ip settings there.
As forahobby says, let me know how ya go.

No, thank YOU Shark2th!

Thanks for the quick reply; witch makes this belated response all the more embarrassing Wink. It got busy at the office this week and I didn’t have any time to mess with the XBOX until today.

Anyhow, I have messed around with a small bit of success with some items, less with others. For the moment I went ahead and simply connected the Xbox to my PC via a patch cable and static IP addresses so that I could get to the next big mod step: The Larger HD Install.

Unfortunately, I’m having some difficulties. I am using the Michael Brim “Install Larger HD into SoftModded Xbox” guide in the tutorial. I downloaded xboxhdm and connected via FlashFXP. But when I navigate to E:\backup\MS, there is no file called eeprom.bin.

Now, I was very careful to backups using both the Create MS backup and Create Mod Backup options in the UnleashX control panel during the first stages of the softmod. Both E:\backup\MS and E:\backup\Mod are both there, but I can’t find an eeprom.bin file anywhere.

I went back and to the beginning and reloaded the Linux save from Splinter Cell again and re-did the Create MS backup and Create Mod Backup in UnleashX. Still no eeprom.bin file.

What is going on? What can I do? Can I still install a hard drive without this file?

Edit: Under E:\backup\MS is:
Folder - Audio
Folder - Fonts
Folder - XBOXDASHDATA 185EAD00
Folder - XOXDASH
File - Xbox Book.xtf
File - Xbox.xtf
File- Xbox Dash.xbe

No .bins anywhere.

Under E:\backup\Mod is Nothing, though I swear there were files in there earlier. So, What do you think?

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS – If you don’t mind, I world like to also ask about this stuff in the SoftMod section. I’m hopping that I could get more responses over there. If for some reason you regard this as inappropriate cross posting, feel free to delete the thread. Thanks.

PS – I don’t know if this has anything to do with anything, but when I launch the MS Dash, I get the black error screen w/ green text in multiple languages. Does this mean anything?

Thanks Gus. I was able to find the eeprom.bin under the backups folder in evox. So that problem is solved. Now on to other issues:

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=67146#67146

I will probably let this thread die for a while, at least until I get my new hard drive installed and I can once again address network issues. If you have any interest in assisting me, or just want to see what ridiculous newbie predicament I am currently in, please see the above thread.

Thanks to Shark2th, Gus 738 and nknave for all of the great advice!

-J

You can get Flashfxp for your networking. You just need to login after you launch it, which would be something like this.

192.168.2.x
username - xbox
pass - xbox
port - 21

Then it will bring up your xbox and you can start to ftp into your xbox.

Hiyo... I'm in the same boat as Fripp, but mine is full of holes. My xbox is sitting beside me here, hooked up to the router, and I don't have a single clue as to where I go next. I know I need an FTP program (and I will get it soon), but do I need to have a monitor hooked up to the box so I can see things working on both systems?

I have XBCMedia Center, Avalaunch.. hell, what else? The "professionals" who installed the modchip and harddrive for me don't have the strongest grasp of the english language, and couldn't tell me how to add more roms to my 'box, they said it already came with a bunch. WELL, a bunch isn't as much as the 725 I've downloaded for SNES, and really wanna play. I tried burning the roms onto a cd, and loading them into my box THAT way (it would seem if you can rip/back-up games, you should be able to copy some files off a cd too.

I'm rambling, and confused, I've searched... please help.

Dave
