Hey Geeds, welcome to the site. First thing you should do is read up some newbie material like Noob's Glossary of terms, Evolution X for Dummies, and just browse through posts and soak in some info.
Modding isn't all that difficult. Basically, all you need is a Xbox, a modchip, and a hacked bios.
You may also want to beef up the HD in the xbox as it is pretty small.
Deciding what modchip you want is almost as tough as actually installing it. To date, I would venture to say that Xectuer 2.3 is a pretty popular chip. Xenium is also popular, but there are so many more out there than just those. There are chips that require soldering, and chips that don't. Again, up to you which way you go.
Once you have your new chip and HD in your box, you then have to flash the chip with a bios that will let you do things that the MS bios wont...like run other apps. Apps that let you install games to HD, that let you play any region DVD, stuff like that.
There are plenty of tutorials on this site to get you going. I also recommend an auto installer. Like DJB's Xbox HQ autoinstaller. It basically does a lot of the work for you.
So, kick back, take a few hours and read away. It's the only way you are going to figure out how to get it done, unless of course you order a machine that is already modded.
If you need some direction in that route, just PM me. I'll point you to a good modder.

I would venture to say that they are both very easy to use. Both give you options I would imagine, so just select and go. However, I would look into what each had to offer. Usually, the newer the release, the better due to having updated apps and the knowledge of past failures. So, with that in mind I would probably elect DJB's autoinstaller, but hey...I'm partial to xbox-hq members _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

Ive used slayers auto installer and it was very easy to use. Takes you though step by step and then it does its thing. I would imagine that DJB's would do the same but with newer apps. Therefore I would recomend useing DJB's. Good luck _________________ XBOX v1.0:
