Hey,
I'd doing a 160 gb Maxtor HDD upgrade for my friend. He has a 1.4 xbox and I'm using my spider chip. I've done about 6 of these same exact harddrives and now I've run into a problem. When I plug the hard drive in and cold boot the box with the AID in, the AID tries to format the disc. (Normal). Triggers, start blah blah blah. ok formatted ... it restarts and i have to do it all again. So i do it. And then after the 2nd time it says that
"cannot install all require files
this is usually caused by not enough space on the E or X drive"
does anyone know how to fix this hdd? _________________ Blue Chaos

Hi Dark_Rebel,
Ive never come accross this issue before ever..
Are you sure its just not a faulty HDD??
It strange that you have done many of these drives and now this one is playing up..
Would i would double check:
- Check the sticker on the top of the hdd to make sure they havent changed around the jumper settings for this hdd..
- Make the jumjper settings = CS (cable select) on the hdd
- try and format again..

yea thats what im thinking because i already changed and made sure it is on CS, and it WAS working for about 10 minutes then when i rebooted it kept making me format it again. The first time it took 5 times or so before it would get out of the cycle. But now i cant even get out of it. _________________ Blue Chaos

You could always try and format it in computer. Hopefully it would just do the format. Then pop it back in the box and use the aid to format it for the box. Atleast if it didn't do the format in the computer then you would know it was bad. _________________ Xbox v1.3

Thanks cantgetitright, I was going to do that tonight actually after I'm done working on my mousetrap car lol. However, I have this before with another drive, and the drive was locked and I wasnt able to format it via windows last time, I had to put the drive back in its xbox and unlock it before I could format it. _________________ Blue Chaos

I hope this helps. _________________ Xbox v1.3

Well windows may have a problem seeing the drive since the partition is an XFAT partition. You most likely will need to boot the box into dos mode and try Fdisk and see if you can delete the partition that way and recreate a primary partition (but I doubt it) or boot the box into Linux and use one of it's partitioning utilities to kill off that XFAT partition. I doubt the drive is dead, it is just in an unusable state via Windows.

So should I find a linux operated comp and an app. that somehow recognizes the XFAt. and try it that way. even when i have had drives still locked and format to XFat, the copmuter (windows) recognized it. I did however have to unlock them, but I formatted them in the comp and not the box. So i am alittle confused that this is the answer. _________________ Blue Chaos

Dark Rebel
I thought this would work. It is a huge pain in the a--. I have done two drives this way and both are in box's right now. I have a external usb drive that I used. Either way. I think you have to set the drive to active. A menu should come up and ask you if you would like to assign a drive letter. You have to give it a drive letter for it to work. Once the comp see's it, then you can delete the partions and format the drive. I am going to see if I have any hard drives that I can check. If I do, then I will post step by step instructions. _________________ Xbox v1.3
